Feather in the cap

Breguet’s Rêve de Plume

Feather in the cap

As it transpires, Queen Marie-Antoinette, wife of Louis XVI, was a rather prolific writer; only that this fondness for the written word was largely confined to letter writing to her husband and family in Austria.

This year, Breguet commemorates this central figure in history, and her penchant for letter writing, with a new high jewellery timepiece dubbed the Rêve de Plume. As the latest edition to the Plumes collection of this august watchmaker, this timepiece features a sculpted diamond feather that recalls the quill pens of that turbulent time in French history.

On the feather’s central shaft lie baguette diamonds while the outer web-like part is formed by brilliant-cut diamonds, selected by size to create the effect of a singular, astonishingly complex, feather. Its white mother-of-pearl dial is shaped by an ‘engine-turned pattern’ to further evoke the delicate vanes on a feather. Both the bezel and flange are similarly set with diamonds, with a single briolette-cut diamond on the crown.

In all, over four carats of diamonds can be found on this timepiece that Breguet has made available in either 18k white or rose gold. Powering the timepiece is the self-winding calibre 586, with a silicon balance-spring that is virtually impervious to magnetism. The timepiece comes with a satin strap with a folding clasp, set with 26 brilliant-cut diamonds.

Best of all, accompanying the Rêve de Plume timepiece is a set of jewellery in white or rose gold, similarly taking after the quill motif. These jewellery additions comprise earrings, ring and necklace with diamond-set feathers, perfect for that next red carpet event where details say it all.
