Near and far: The best cities around the world for NYE countdown

Say it isn’t so—we’re just 15 days away from 2016. Where did the year go? On the bright side, it’s party season! And it is also on New Year’s Eve where celebrations are in full throttle, and skylines of cities all over the world are lit by bursts of fireworks. If you are looking for a last-minute holiday destination to see the year out, consider these places for a memorable NYE countdown:

Near:

Singapore

For a quick getaway, pop by “next door” and welcome 2016 in style with spectacular views of the Marina Bay fireworks display. Our pick for a countdown to remember? Raise the roof at the Taittinger Pop-up Bar—located at the outdoor terrace of Novotel Singapore Clarke Quay, you will be treated with a breathtaking skyline view of the city and free flow of beverages from 9pm to 12.30am.

Bangkok, Thailand

Enter the land of amazing food and thriving nightlife—but you might want to stray away from the clubs and pubs on NYE. Instead, partake in festivities on the Chao Phraya River, also known as the River of Kings. Go onboard the Loy Nava Dinner Cruise, where you will get to savour a lavish ten-course Thai Traditional Dinner, party favours, and watch the fireworks light up the sky come midnight.

Just a little further:

Hong Kong

With its stunning skyline and world-famous harbour, Hong Kong serves as the perfect backdrop for NYE festivities. Pre-countdown, time your Star Ferry ride as such that at the stroke of 8pm, you will be rewarded with sweeping views of the Symphony of Lights show from the river. Later, as the clock ticks down to midnight, exciting pyrotechnics will light up the sky, illuminating the harbour in a radiant shower of lights.

Sydney, Australia

Be one of the first in the world to ring in 2016 here in the land down under. Watch the spectacular fireworks display unfold before you at the Sydney harbour—the 12-minute wonder will feature a huge range of pyrotechnic effects from seven barges in the harbour, four sails of the Sydney Opera House, and firing points from across the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Go the distance:

New York City, USA

There is something about New York City—the bustling, invigorating vibes in the city that never sleeps may not be for everyone, but there is no denying that the NYE atmosphere is almost unrivalled in scale: an estimated one million merrymakers in Times Square complete with neon lights, world-class performers and that famous ball drop—you’ll be in for a night to remember.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Although best known for its Carnival festivities, Rio de Janeiro’s iconic Copacabana Beach also plays host to the world’s largest NYE party. The celebration includes live music shows, featuring everything from traditional Brazilian music to hard rock and roll. When midnight strikes, an amazing fireworks display that lasts for 15 to 20 minutes rounds up the night on a high note.
