Checking In: JW Marriott Singapore South Beach Nails the Art of the City Stay

Singapore has a way of leaving you quietly awed. From touchdown at Changi to afternoons spent exploring its curated attractions, this island nation rarely misses a beat. Where it truly excels, though, is in its hotels—many of which feel like destinations in their own right.

On our recent trip to the Little Red Dot, we checked into JW Marriott Hotel Singapore South Beach—a design-driven address in the Civic and Cultural District, right by City Hall. With striking architectural lines, intuitive service, and a location that hums with urban energy, the hotel redefines what modern luxury looks and feels like. These five details made the experience one to remember.

ART AS ATMOSPHERE

Contemporary digital art pulses through the veins of this hotel, beginning with ‘Fantasia’—a commanding installation by South Korean artist Lee Lee Nam that greets guests upon arrival. Comprising 450 LED panels, the five-minute animation moves through four phases of life in a symphony of colour, motion, and cutting-edge technology.

Step inside, and the sensory journey continues in the guest elevators with ‘Animalia’ by Milan-based duo Francesco Rugi and Silvia Quintanilla. Here, the walls become an immersive canvas, evoking an imagined underwater world that once existed before the coastline was reclaimed. Under shifting red, green, and blue lights, sea creatures come and go—an illusion of presence, a tribute to the unseen.

ANCHORED IN HISTORY

Another undeniable draw is the location. South Beach Development occupies a rare space—where restored heritage buildings and contemporary design coexist seamlessly. The 1930s army barracks of the former Beach Road Camp and the old Non-Commissioned Officers (NCO) Club have been elegantly repurposed—one into a heritage ballroom, the other into a vibrant dining and nightlife enclave.

An eclectic mix of restaurants and bars awaits: Fish Pool, a raw bar built around a glass-clad diving pool complete with live mermaid performances; Cool Cats, a speakeasy-style lounge with international live acts; Madame Fan, known for its modern take on Cantonese cuisine; and Stags’ Room, a quietly luxurious wine room.

Whether you’re in the mood for dim sum, jazz, or a glass of something rare, it’s all just steps away—making the experience as much about discovery as it is about indulgence.

REST WITH A VIEW

JW Marriott Singapore South Beach houses 634 rooms, including 47 suites, all thoughtfully designed with modern amenities and smart technology. Each room comes equipped with IPTV, Wi-Fi phone, and up to seven USB power sockets—ideal for the connected traveller.

We stayed in the Premier Room, and yes—it lives up to the buzz. The king-sized bed is a treat, but what truly caught my eye was the metallic platform set against a patterned carpet—a clever design touch that gives the illusion of a floating bed. There’s also a rocking chair, an unexpected yet soothing addition.

Our favourite detail? The uninterrupted view of Singapore’s Central Business District. For anyone who loves cityscapes, it felt like a private theatre suspended above the skyline.

DINING IN THE DETAILS

The experience extends far beyond the suites—into the refined world of Akira Back, the Japanese restaurant celebrated across continents. Under Chef Akira Back’s direction, the kitchen reimagines traditional Japanese cuisine with bold, contemporary contrasts.

For those less familiar with the style, Chef de Cuisine Bill Hong’s tasting menu serves as an artful entry point—an exploration of Japanese-Korean flavours presented with modern precision. Highlights include the abalone claypot rice and a ‘Hassun’  course featuring Hon Maguro, Shiro Ebi, and oysters with foie gras. Miso ice cream—delicate and not overly sweet—closes the meal on a soft, well-measured note.

In contrast, mornings are best spent at Beach Road Kitchen, just steps from the hotel lobby. Bright and spacious, the restaurant offers not only ample seating but a generous buffet spread that spans local favourites, freshly baked pastries, and international staples. It’s the kind of breakfast that invites a slow start—and perhaps a second plate.

DESIGN MEETS WELLNESS

No stay feels complete without exploring the hotel’s amenities—and at this luxury address, indulgence comes easy. The infinity pool opens up to the city skyline, best enjoyed at dusk when the buildings are bathed in gold and the day gives way to lights.

Just as alluring is Spa by JW, the hotel’s signature wellness concept. Designed to elevate the modern spa ritual, it includes six treatment rooms, a relaxation lounge, and a full suite of thermal facilities—jacuzzi, sauna, and steam room.
