Here’s why you and your girlfriends will love Hawaii for the next girls-only trip

Hawaii is undoubtedly a romantic place to go on vacation with your partner but that doesn’t mean it can’t work for you and your girlfriends either. After all, any reason to fly to the beautiful Hawaiian islands is welcome, right? A huge variety of factors make Hawaii the ultimate destination for a girls-only getaway: the endless stretch of the beach(es), mild tropical weather, the vibrant shopping scene, amazing massages, the local cuisine (land of the poke bowl!) and so much more. Below, a few more reasons to tempt the girlfriends:

1. Explore the hidden beaches

While Waikiki Beach in Honolulu is the standard postcard image of the city, there are so many more lesser-known yet beautiful beaches. On Oahu, for example, that includes the secluded Makua Beach with its alluring soft white sand and waves fit for surfers and bodyboarders (you might even have a chance to spot dolphins here!), as well as Chun’s Reef which is known for its long stretch of beach and a freshwater pond that the kids will love.

2. Go shopping

Who doesn’t love a good deal? Oahu’s Waikele Premium Outlets has over 50 stores featuring designer names and more, while Ala Moana Center takes pride as being the largest open-air shopping mall in the world. Here’s where you can splurge a little at brands like Abercrombie & Fitch to Zara, or at designer stores including Chanel, Prada and Burberry.

3. Be pampered at the spa

No girls getaway is complete without a pampering session and Hawaii is yet another perfect place to unwind. There are many spas around but the one experience you and your girlfriends shouldn’t miss out on is the traditional Hawaiian massage called lomilomi. The massage is known to help release tension, improve circulation and rejuvenate both the body and mind.

4. Enjoy the local cuisine

The food scene in Hawaii is as colourful as its culture and can range from quaint food stalls to plate lunches (a quintessential Hawaiian meal) to chef-inspired dining. If you’ve been in on the poke bowl rage, you definitely have to try it where it first began! A quick glance at the menu at Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck is enough to make your mouth water: think fresh scampi drizzled with tangy lemon butter, and hot and spicy shrimp that gets better with each bite. Cool off after with shaved ice which comes in a wide assortment of flavours, ranging from red bean to passion fruit to guava. Another favourite snack is fresh pineapple topped with li hing mui powder (essentially salty dried plum powder). Be sure to also check out the gorgeous restaurants on Honolulu such as Koko Head Cafe, Morimoto and Alan Wong’s for dishes that are as delicious as they are Instagram-worthy. Even better, visit the local markets for a taste of everything. The KCC Farmer’s Market in Honolulu is especially popular. Let’s just say, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

5. Catch the Hawaiian sunset

Sunsets are great for Instagram, a moment of self-reflection and a glass of champagne; and all three makes a great combination for a girls’ day out on a sunset cruise. If you’re more of an adventurous group, you can even opt to drive up to Tantalus lookout, a spot which offers a unique sunset view and has been deemed one of Oahu’s most Instagrammable places.

6. Try your hand at water sports

From surfing to snorkelling to paddle-boarding, the options are pretty much endless. Since you’re going with your girls, it’s even more fun to learn surfing together as a group. After all, this is where surfing was born and if not now, then when? Even better, go out of your comfort zone if you dare and try outrigger canoe riding (it’s been called the original Hawaiian rollercoaster ride), yoga on a surfboard (how good is your balancing?), parasailing, jet-skiing, kitesurfing and more.

7. It’s easy to fly to Hawaii

AirAsia now flies daily to Honolulu with an all-in fare from only RM899 (one-way) while non-member fare starts from RM904 (one-way).
