Galaxy Unpacked 2021: Introducing the Galaxy Z Fold3, Galaxy Z Flip3, and more

Samsung has finally unfolded its highly-anticipated Galaxy Unpacked Event for 2021, pulling all the stops in its quest to make foldable phones a serious gamechanger in the smartphone industry with both the Galaxy Fold3 5G and Galaxy Z Flip3. That’s not all, the Korean tech behemoth has also unveiled its new Galaxy Watch4 Series that features an all-new OS, plus its smallest earbuds yet in the form of the Galaxy Buds2.

Here’s the full lowdown on everything Samsung has unveiled at the Galaxy Unpacked 2021 event.

Galaxy Z Fold3 5G

Starting with the flagship foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Fold3 will launch with a 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X Display with a resolution of 2208 x 1768 pixels for its main screen. Meanwhile, the cover gets a 6.2-inch HD+ Dynamic AMOLED Display with 2268 x 832 pixels. Both screens now feature a 120 Hz adaptive refresh rate, on par with current industry standards.

Under the hood, it is powered by the latest Snapdragon 888, paired with 12GB RAM and either 256GB or 512GB of internal storage. As for cameras, it features a triple rear camera setup with 12MP Ultra-Wide, Wide-angle and Telephoto lenses, plus a 10MP lens on the cover. Inside, there’s a 4MP camera under-the-panel for an uninterrupted viewing experience—a first for the brand. It packs 4,400mAh battery that supports 25W fast charging. Other features include a USB-C port, a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, GPS, Wi-Fi 6, NFC, Bluetooth 5.0, and 5G support.

What’s new: Durability is Samsung’s key focus with both its latest foldable smartphones, featuring Armor Aluminium (“our strongest aluminium frame yet”) and Corning’s toughest Gorilla Glass Victus for protection. There’s also an added protective film on the main screen that makes it 80 per cent more scratch-resistant than before. In addition, the Z Fold3 features an IPX8 rating—the world’s first water-resistance capability in a foldable.

For the first time, the Z Fold3 comes with S Pen support, compatible with the S Pen Pro and exclusively-designed S Pen Fold Edition. It will arrive in three colourways with a sleek matte finish: Phantom Green, Phantom Black, and Phantom Silver.

Galaxy Z Flip3 5G

On the flip side (see what we did there), the Z Flip3 will launch with a 6.7-inch FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X 1,080 x 2,640 pixel display with 120 Hz refresh rate on the main screen. The cover screen has a 1.9-inch Super AMOLED 260 x 512 pixel display that’s slightly larger than before for greater functionality and customisability.

The latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset powers the smartphone, paired with 8GB RAM and either 128GB or 256GB of internal storage. Dual cameras are integrated into the rear metal strip, consisting of a 12MP Ultra-Wide camera and 12MP Wide-angle camera. There’s also a 10MP Selfie Camera on the front, but with an Infinity-O cutout instead of the under-panel design seen in the Z Fold3.

Battery power is rated at 3,300mAh, with 15W wireless and reverse charging support. Other features include a USB-C port, a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, GPS, Wi-Fi 6, NFC, Bluetooth 5.0, and 5G support.

What’s new: Like its older brother, the Z Flip3 is equipped with Armor Aluminium, Corning Gorilla Glass Victus, and IPX8 water-resistance for improved durability overall. Design-wise, it’s clear that Samsung is targeting the style-savvy crowd with its unique two-tone colour scheme, featuring a colourful matte layer juxtaposed against a glossy black metal frame on the glass back. It will be offered in four colourways at launch: Cream, Green, Lavender, and Phantom Black. There will also be three online exclusives available in Gray, White, or Pink.

Galaxy Watch4 & Galaxy Watch4 Classic

After hinting at a collaboration with Google on a new wearable platform during the Google I/O event, Samsung has finally pulled the wraps off its latest smartwatch(es). Meet the all-new Galaxy Watch4 (replacing the Galaxy Watch Active series) and Galaxy Watch4 Classic (succeeding the Galaxy Watch3). The former features either a 40mm or 44mm display, whilst the latter is slightly larger at 42mm or 46mm and comes with the fan-favourite rotating bezel.

According to Samsung, the new One UI Watch interface warrants the rechristening, signalling a more seamless experience across Galaxy devices, on top of providing access to the Google Play Store and Google apps.

What’s new: The Galaxy Watch4 comes with the first 5nm processor in a Galaxy Watch, giving it a 20 per cent faster CPU and 50 per cent increased RAM. Highlighting the Galaxy Watch4 Series is the Samsung BioActive Sensor, a 3-in-1 sensor that measures Optical Heart Rate (PCG), Electrical Heart Rate (ECG), and Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) for improved health and fitness tracking.

Additionally, storage space is now doubled to 16GB to make space for more apps. In terms of battery life, both models can last up to 40 hours on a full charge. It takes only 30 minutes of quick charging for 10 hours of battery life, and less than two hours for a full charge. The Galaxy Watch4 comes in Black, Silver, Green, and Pink, while the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic is available in Black and Silver.

Price:

  • RM1,299 for Galaxy Watch4 Classic 42mm | RM1,399 for the Galaxy Watch4 Classic 46mm
  • RM899 for Galaxy Watch4 40mm | RM999 for Galaxy Watch4 44mm

Galaxy Buds2

Finally, there’s the Galaxy Buds2—Samsung’s smallest and lightest earbuds yet. The Buds2 is built with improved active noise cancelling (ANC) technology that cuts external background noise by up to 98 per cent. It also offers three levels of ambient sound to control how much of your surroundings you can hear. To maximise call clarity, it features three microphones and a voice pickup unit (VPU) for crisp, crystal-clear audio. The battery offers up to five hours of playback with ANC turned on and up to 20 hours when charged in the case.

The Galaxy Buds 2 comes in four colours: Graphite, White, Olive, and Lavender. They each come in a minimal white case with interiors that match the colour of the earbuds.
