Samsung Galaxy S22 Series launch in Malaysia: Everything you need to know

The Galaxy Unpacked 2022 event has officially been unveiled, pulling the wraps off three new Samsung flagship models: The Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+ and Galaxy S22 Ultra. Announced via a livestream on the brand’s website on February 9, the event marked a “rule-breaking” feature—the integration of the Galaxy Note’s signature S Pen into the range-topping Galaxy S22 Ultra.

We’ll dive a little more into how the S Pen works with the S22 series further down this article. First, let’s take a closer look at the specs for the three new flagship Samsung Galaxy smartphones.

DESIGN & DISPLAY

Building on the design legacy of the Galaxy S21 Series, the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+ feature a contour cut camera design with a matte finish. Instead of a two-tone colour scheme seen in their predecessor, however, both phones boast an analogous camera housing and body. On the other hand, the S22 Ultra integrates the camera into the body for a seamless look.

All three phones feature a symmetrical flat glass back for a sleek and elegant profile that feels more ergonomic to hold. The Galaxy S22 Series also boasts the first-ever use of Armour Aluminium in the S line, which was first seen in the Z Flip 3 and Z Fold 3. In addition, the phones are built with a more durable Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+ on the front and back—a feature exclusive to the Galaxy S22.

All three Galaxy S22 smartphones come with Dynamic AMOLED 2x display and a 120Hz refresh rate for vibrant colours, crisp sharpness, and smooth scrolling. Plus, there’s a new Vision booster feature that uses AI technology to produce clear, vivid colours and details even when the phone is under direct sunlight. Samsung’s Eye Comfort Shield also comes as standard to automatically adjust blue light levels to help reduce eye fatigue and eye strain.

CAMERA

Samsung hasn’t made drastic changes to the camera hardware, but makes up for it with a host of software upgrades. Regardless, here are the camera specs at a glance:

Moving on to the software bumps, there’s a new buzzword for one of the key camera features: Nightography. It’s not hard to guess what this feature brings—significantly improved low-light photography and videography, especially in the S22 Ultra. This is achieved by combining the model’s 108MP camera with nona-binning technology to produce brighter and clearer results, regardless of the lighting conditions. According to Samsung, this is their “best AI camera ever”.

What’s more, the Galaxy S22 Ultra features an impressive 100x Space Zoom, which includes 10x Optical Zoom (thanks to the second telephoto lens) and 100x digital zoom with Al Super Resolution technology.

Other notable features across all three models include Pro Mode and Expert RAW support (giving users greater creative control for post-capture editing); Auto Framing (to track subjects and ensure they stay in the frame); and Portrait Mode (which works for both photos and videos, humans and pets, day and night).

PERFORMANCE & BATTERY

One of the key factors supporting the many AI advancements of the Galaxy S22 Series is the new 4nm processor under its hood. Samsung says it is the first smartphone to be powered by this processor, promising enhanced security and improved performance. For the Malaysian market, the phones will be equipped with the Snapdragon® 8 Gen 1 processor, instead of the previous Exynos chips.

Given the more power-efficient chips, Samsung has reduced the battery capacity for two models, excluding the S22 Ultra:

S PEN

As mentioned earlier, the Galaxy S22 Ultra is the first smartphone in the S Series to come with a built-in S Pen. Better yet, the latency has been reduced from 9ms to 2.8ms, making writing feel smoother and more natural. It also features improved coordinate prediction algorithm to anticipate the direction in which users will draw for a more intelligent user experience. On top of the hardware upgrades, Samsung has also added a few new software features to make multi-tasking even more convenient, including the ability to use the Galaxy S22 as a colour palette while drawing in Samsung Notes on the new Samsung Galaxy Tab S8.

COLOURS

Samsung says the colourways for the phones “take inspiration from nature and current trends.” On that note, the Phantom Black and Phantom White options appear to still be in-trend, appearing across all models. Two other colours are offered for each variant, making up a total of four per model:
