Oppo Find N2 Flip review: 5 Things I never knew I needed in a phone

After my whirlwind trip to Singapore for the launch of the much-awaited Oppo Find N2 Flip and spending two weeks with it, I can honestly say that this new flagship phone from the brand has never left my hand or mind ever since. The phone has set these five standards that I never knew I needed in a mobile phone (in no order):

  1. Compact, slim design
  2. Option for handsfree photo taking
  3. Lasting battery and fast charging
  4. Virtual pets
  5. A cover screen with multiple functions

Let me break it down for you.

Design

The moment I saw the lavender shade of the phone, I was like a moth drawn to a flame. To add to that, the phone felt light in my hands, with a sleek and stylish design to boot. Not to forget the fact that it can be flipped (read: folded to a compact, pocket-size device), which makes it even better because I can just slip it into my pockets or bag compartments easily. As someone who is always on the go, having a phone that can match my aesthetic and lifestyle is essential, and the Oppo Find N2 Flip fits the bill.

It’s available in two colourways, Astral Black and Moonlit Purple (my pick). Aesthetics aside, I appreciate how my fingerprint marks were less obvious thanks to its fingerprint-resistant glass cover.

Camera

One of the standout features of this phone is the camera (see me using it during my trip here). As a writer who has to be out and about to cover launches and events regularly, having a good phone camera that can adapt to different lighting conditions is a must. Thankfully, the Oppo Find N2 Flip cameras did not disappoint. The rear cameras consist of a 50-megapixel wide-angle lens with Sony IMX890 Sensor and a 112-degree ultra-wide lens, while the front camera features a 32-megapixel lens with Sony IMX709 Sensor and Oppo’s new-generation RGBW. Armed with the MariSilicon X Imaging NPU, my photos in low-light to natural lighting conditions came out crisp and clear despite zooming in.

The front camera selfie in low-light lighting turned out well.
I would recommend adjusting the beauty mode level to avoid looking too filtered like this selfie.

Other than that, the phone has many photography modes such as night, portrait, video, pano, movie, time-lapse, slo-mo, sticker, text scanner and Xpan.

More on the exclusive Xpan feature—this special photography mode from Oppo’s collaboration with Hasselblad which co-developed the camera system really offered a unique photography experience. I didn’t have to move the camera to take a panorama shot and the colours were vibrant without needing to use the Master Filters.

Futhermore, there’s a window-like shortcut on the upper left of the camera screen where you can click on it to activate the live view on the cover screen too! For example, when I was taking a photo of a friend, she could check herself out before I captured the shot, making it perfect for taking OOTDs. Not forgetting the fact that it folds easily due to its FlexForm Mode4 that can hold the phone in three angles, so I can take photos and videos hands-free! I find this super helpful for content creators or those group shots when you don’t have a phone stand to stabilise your phone. You bet that I even binged watched some Youtube videos without holding the device.

Battery life

Did the phone live up to its claim of having a day-long battery life and SuperVOOC flash charging? Well, I put it to the test by using it to record videos and take photos for an entire day without charging it until I got home and there was still a decent amount of battery left that allowed me to navigate my journey back with Waze. Suffice to say, Oppo’s decision to fit a massive 4,300mAh battery (the largest compared to other flip phones in the market) into the Find N2 Flip’s compact body worked out well. The brand also worked closely with MediaTek to create an optimised version of its flagship Dimensity 9000+ chipset that is said to provide one more hour of video calling, two more hours of social media, and five hours of music streaming.

As for the fast charging feature, according to Oppo’s tests, the Find N2 Flip is the first flip phone to confidently offer a full day of use on a single charge, the fastest charging of any flip phone, thanks to its 44WSuperVOOC charger—taking the battery from nearly empty to 50 per cent in just 23 minutes, and up to 100 per cent in less than one hour. I can say that it lived up to this claim as I checked on the battery life every half an hour, and I only needed to check it twice to find it fully charged.

Virtual Pets

I love it when a phone includes little touches like this to add a touch of fun other than only having functional features. It brought back memories of Tamagotchi (remember those?), and I enjoyed having the option of nurturing a virtual pet that will perform cute actions that imitate how I used the phone. For instance, when I snap a photo, my pet would also be taking a photo, and when it’s late at night, it’ll show that my pet is asleep.

Plus, I don’t need to worry about feeding it and I can choose from five different animals  including a cat, dog, bird, rabbit, and hamster. Apart from virtual pets, you can even feature your Bitmoji on the Always-On Display for a more expressive take.

Cover screen

This phone hits it out of the ballpark by having the biggest cover screen in the flip phone market currently, measuring 3.26 inches. Its large size and vertical orientation make everything easier to do from taking selfies to checking notifications. Plus, I could display as many as six notifications on the screen without even opening my phone, which is super convenient.

Verdict

Overall, the Oppo Find N2 Flip is a fantastic phone with some really unique features that make it stand out among the flip phones on the market (virtual pets being one of them). The size and camera are definitely highlights, but the flip design and fast charging make it a great choice for anyone who wants a phone that can keep up with your content creation journey too.

The Oppo Find N2 Flip is priced from RM3,999 and can be purchased at the Oppo Brand Store and Oppo’s official online store. Visit the website for more information.
