All the deets on the new eighth-generation iPad and Apple Watch Series 6

No, there will not be a new phone—for now, at least. Although Apple did not announce or reveal any information about the iPhone 12, the company did unveil two major additions to its portfolio. They are the eighth-generation iPad and the Apple Watch Series 6. More about these new gadgets below.

The iPad is, without a doubt, one of the most recognisable tech products in the world. In fact, it is also Apple’s most popular option from its iPad category. In addition to the built-in eight-Megapixel back camera and front FaceTime HD camera, the iPad is also fitted with a 10.2-inch Retina display. There’s more!

What sets the new iPad apart from its predecessors is the addition of the A12 Bionic chip. With this, users can expect a CPU performance that’s quicker by 40 per cent as well as twice the graphics capability. For improved machine learning capabilities, Apple has also equipped the iPad with Neutral Engine. This includes people occlusion and motion tracking in Siri performance, augmented reality (AR) apps, and enhanced photo editing. This is a first on an iPad, by the way.

If you’re an avid note-taker or really into drawing, the new iPad is said to be the ideal gadget for that—especially when combined with iPad OS 14 and Apple Pencil. With iPad OS that’s available from 16 September, there will also be some new features. They include Smart Selection that utilises on-device machine learning to differentiate handwriting from drawings. As for Scribble, typed text can be formed when converted from handwriting.

Available in Malaysia soon, the eighth-generation iPad (32 Gigabytes and 128 Gigabytes) will be priced from RM1,449 for the Wi-Fi model and RM1,999 for the Wi-Fi + Cellular model. The three colours you can choose from are silver, space grey, and gold.

Apple Watch Series 6

In addition to the new iPad, Apple has also unveiled the Apple Watch Series 6. According to Jeff Williams, the company’s Chief Operating Officer, the product “completely redefines what a watch can do.” So, what makes the smartwatch unique?

Let’s begin with design and performance. While the battery life of 18 hours is maintained (it only takes 1.5 hours to complete a full charge), apps can now be launched 20 per cent faster with the new dual-core processor based on A13 Bionic in iPhone 11. Apple Watch Series 6 is also equipped with U1 chip and Ultra Wideband antennas.

With Apple Watch Series 6, it is now easier for users to see the screen even in bright sunlight because of an improved Always-On Retina display that’s up to 2.5 times brighter than Apple Watch Series 5. Moreover, without having to wake the screen, users access Notification Centre and Control Centre, tap on complications, as well as swipe to change faces. All these can be done with the wrist down.

New to Apple Watch Series 6 is Blood Oxygen Sensor. The feature utilises four clusters of green, red, and infrared LEDs, as well as measures light reflected back from blood using four photodiodes on the back crystal of Apple Watch. Oxygen saturation in blood helps one understand their overall fitness and wellness and the new feature helps measure this conveniently.

In addition to the silver, space grey, and gold aluminium case options, as well as (Product)Red Apple Watch, there will be a new blue colour option. Moreover, a newcomer in the stainless steel model category is graphite and an updated yellow gold.

Although the exact date has not been revealed, Apple Watch Series 6 (GPS) will be in Malaysia starting at RM1,749 whereas Apple Watch Series 6 (GPS + Cellular) starts at RM2,199.
