Apple Introduces a New Generation of AirTag, Five Years After Its Initial Release

Losing your things has never been less stressful with Apple’s new generation of AirTag. Here’s everything you need to know about it.

Five years after the AirTag’s initial release, Apple has finally announced a new generation of the world’s favourite item finder. Powered by the expansive Find My network, the new AirTag comes with improved Precision Finding, a wider Bluetooth range, and a louder speaker. All of these improvements work together to optimise findability and efficiency in locating misplaced items. The Share Item Location feature also allows users to expand the search crew by sending temporary secure website links to trusted third parties, who can assist in locating missing items such as luggages. Below, we outline the key features in this new AirTag, so you won’t have to break a sweat over losing track of your items again.

ENHANCED FINDABILITY & RANGE

Within the new AirTag is the same second-generation Ultra Wideband chip (U2) that you’ll find in the iPhone 17 family, iPhone Air, Apple Watch Ultra 3, and Apple Watch Series 11. It also comes with an upgraded Bluetooth chip and a speaker that is 50 percent louder, which means users can activate sounds on their AirTags from farther away.

PRECISION FINDING

With the Ultra Wideband chip, users can expect an even better Precision Finding feature that can guide them to their misplaced items from up to 1.5 times farther away than the previous generation, using haptic, visual, and audio feedback. The redesigned speaker also allows you to hear your AirTag from up to twice the distance—and there’s a new chime too. For the first time ever, this feature is also now available on Apple Watch Series 9 or later and Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later.

SHARE ITEM LOCATION

Another feature that assists with recovering misplaced items is Share Item Location. It allows users to temporarily share the item’s location via a secure web link with a trusted third party. Apple has partnered with over 50 airlines, who will be able to accept and utilise this service to track missing luggage. The link can be disabled and sharing can be stopped at any time. If not done manually, it will automatically expire in seven days.

PRICE AND AVAILABILITY

The new AirTag will be available in stores and online soon in packs of one or four, priced at RM129 and RM429 respectively. Personalised engraving is also available at checkout when purchasing online. It is compatible with all existing accessories, including the FineWoven Key Ring, now available in five colours—fox orange, midnight purple, navy, moss, and black—for RM179.
