She is one of the most successful Japanese artists of our time and her exhibitions often elicit long lines of queues. Case in point – the current ‘Yayoi Kusama: Life Is The Heart Of A Rainbow’ showcase at National Gallery of Singapore. Fret not if you are unable to catch the exhibition across the causeway for the artist’s own museum will be opening at Tokyo’s Shinjuku ward this October 2017.
The Yayoi Kusama Museum will be housed in a five-storey white building and we can already imagine what a wonderment this spot will be. The ground floor will serve as the entrance and gift shop, while the second and third floor will act as exhibition spaces of the artist’s works. Yayoi’s famous and Instagram-friendly immersive installations will be housed on the fourth floor. On the fifth floor is a reading room, which will have materials related to the artist and her work, and also an outdoor space.
For the opening, the museum’s inaugural exhibition called ‘Creation of a Solitary Pursuit, Love is What Brings You Closer to Art’ will run from 1st October 2017 to 25th February 2018. You can purchase timed tickets (90 minutes) from 28th August.
Yayoi Kusama Museum is located at 107 Bentencho, Shinjuku. Opening hours are from 11am to 5pm, Thursdays to Sundays. General admission fee is ¥1,000 (approximatedly RM39).
