Taylor Swift drops new single, Lee Seung Gi coming to KL, ‘Desperate Housewives’ creator’s new show and more

Hello pop culture junkies! Just like last Friday, we’ve recorded another round of our Pop Culture Catch-Up podcast to discuss the biggest news in entertainment this week. In this second episode, we talk about Liam and Miley’s controversial breakup, who should play Prince Eric in Disney’s upcoming live-action remake and why you should watch Marc Cherry’s new show Why Women Kill. Do have a listen below and tell us what you think.

Now on to this week’s top trending entertainment news!

Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus split

It feels like just yesterday when we were woken up to news that Hollywood’s favourite couple have decided to call it quits. After 10 years of being together (on-and-off, if we might add) and almost eight months of marriage, Miley and Liam have broken up and gone their separate ways.

While we don’t know who actually made the decision to call things off, we do know that Miley’s camp first broke the news to the public. In a statement to PEOPLE on 10 August, a rep for the 26-year-old singer said, “Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time. Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers. They still remain dedicated parents to all of their animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart. Please respect their process and privacy.”

Since then, the breakup has been a wrecking ball of a mess due to all the negative press surrounding the couple that surfaced after the split. If you had the chance to listen to our podcast above, you’ll see that we clearly can’t keep up with all the rumours. To make things worse (or better depending on how you look at it), Miley released a new single today which clearly hints at how her relationship with Liam has taken a turn for the worse.

Harry Styles turned down huge Disney role

In another sad pop culture news, Harry Styles reportedly turned down the role of Prince Eric in Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. Just last month, the internet blew up when rumours surfaced that the ex-One Direction singer was in early negotiations to play the iconic role, but it wasn’t until this past Tuesday that reports confirmed that Harry had “respectfully passed on the role”.

Production for The Little Mermaid is anticipated to begin early next year. It will be directed by Rob Marshall and it will incorporate original songs from the 1989 animated classic, as well as new ones from composer Alan Menken with lyrics by Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda. Among the current confirmed cast are Halle Bailey as Ariel, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder and Awkwafina as Scuttle.

Who do you think should play Prince Eric?

Lee Seung Gi is coming to KL

Ladies, brace yourselves because South Korean heartthrob Lee Seung Gi (best known for his roles in My Girlfriend Is a Nine-Tailed Fox and A Korean Odyssey) announced that he’ll be coming to Malaysia to promote his new series, Vagabond! Set to air on Netflix this September, Vogabond is an action-thriller drama that will see the 32-year-old singer-actor playing a stuntman on the hunt to find the person responsible for killing his nephew. Starring alongside him is Suzy, whom you’ll remember as the former member of girl group Miss A. She’ll play a covert agent working for the National Intelligence Service (NIS).

This tour will also mark the 15th anniversary of Seung Gi’s debut as an artiste and it’ll include him stopping by cities like Bangkok, Singapore and Manila as well to meet fans.

A new show by the creator of Desperate Housewives and Devious Maids

Fans of Wisteria Lane, listen up! There’s a new comedy-drama in town and trust us, it’s going to be right up your alley.

Introducing Why Women Kill, a new 10-episode TV series created by Marc Cherry that literally just premiered today in the US. Starring Ginnifer Goodwin, Lucy Liu and Kirby Howell-Baptiste, this “darkly comedic” drama centers on three different women—a housewife in the ’60s, a socialite in the ’80s and a lawyer in 2018, who are dealing with infidelity in their marriages. So what binds them together besides husband issues, you ask? Well, all three stories take place within the same Pasadena mansion.

We don’t know about you, but the moment we saw Lucy Liu on screen, we were already all in. The intriguing plot was just the bonus.

Taylor Swift’s new single

As fans wait in anticipation for Miss Swift’s long-awaited seventh studio album to drop later this month, the singer decided to calm everyone’s nerves down by releasing the title track to her Lover album at noon today. But let’s be honest. We can’t calm down.

The dreamy and romantic song gave fans a glimpse into her relationship with boyfriend Joe Alwyn. And while the lyrics do not confirm a possible engagement (which fans were hoping for), it still is one of her most romantic songs to date. In her Vogue cover story, Taylor shared that this song has one of her favourite bridges of all time. “I love a bridge, and I was really able to go to Bridge City,” Taylor said.

You won’t have to wait long for the music video as well. Taylor announced that it will premiere on 22 August after a YouTube Live. That’s only six more days to go!

Mattel reveals Star Wars x Barbie collection

Star Wars x Barbie

Good news for fans of both Barbie and Star Wars, toymaker Mattel and Disney have joined forces to release Princess Leia, Darth Vader and R2-D2 dolls. Inspired by Episode IV: A New Hope, the dolls retails for US$100 (approximately RM420) each. Despite the hefty price tag, we have to command the attention to detail Mattel has put into each doll. From the outfits and makeup, to their hair and accessories, they all look like fashionable versions of our favourite classic characters and we absolutely love how extra it is.

The collection is currently available for pre-order on Amazon and will ship out in November.
