Netflix’s ‘The Ghost Bride’ kicks off production in Malaysia

After Marco Polo, yet another Netflix Original series’ filming will take place in Malaysia. This time, it’s a Mandarin drama based on the New York Times bestseller and debut novel of Malaysian author Yangsze Choo titled The Ghost Bride.

Set in 1890s Colonial-era Malacca, it tells the story of a woman who has received a proposal from a wealthy family to become the “ghost bride” to their recently deceased son. It is lucrative arrangement that will save her family from a lifetime of debt, but she will be haunted for the rest of her life. She soon finds herself embroiled in the shadowy parallel world of the Chinese afterlife and the family’s darkest secrets. Will she able to make her escape? Watch the production’s first teaser here:

Production in collaboration with Ideate Media is now underway, with an international crew from Hollywood, Taiwan, as well as Malaysia. The six-episode series will be directed by award-winning local directors Quek Shio-Chuan (Guang The Movie) and Ho Yu-Hang (At the End of Daybreak), with a stellar cast featuring actor Wu Kang Jen (White Ant) and fellow Taiwanese actress Huang Peijia in the lead roles. The pair will be joined in a love triangle by Canadian-Chinese star Ludi Lin (Power Rangers, Aquaman). Repping Malaysia and rounding out the main cast is musical and theatre actor Tian Tze Kuang.
