Meet the anime ambassadors of Tokyo 2020 Olympics

If there’s one thing that Japanese culture stands out for, it has to be anime. So it is only apt that some of the country’s most popular anime characters be named as the official ambassadors of Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Much to the delight of fans, Astro Boy, Crayon Shin-chan, Goku from Dragon Ball, Jibanyan from Yokai Watch, Luffy from One Piece, Naruto, Pretty Cure and Sailor Moon were all introduced as the ambassadors in a video posted on the Olympic Channel Facebook page. Notably missing is the much beloved Pikachu but don’t lose hope just yet; the Games isn’t till three years from now, so a surprise could be in store.

The hype of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics is certainly growing bigger with the introduction of its anime friends. A range of merchandise featuring the characters have also gone on sale. The games also made news recently as plans are underway to produce the Olympic medals out of recycled mobile phones. A move that organisers hope will help to promote sustainability and reduce costs.

A recycling campaign will be initiated from this April onwards where the Japanese public can donate old phones and small appliances. Approximately two tonnes of gold, silver and bronze will be needed to make the 5,000 medals.
