What to expect from the Ikea x NASA collaboration

Ikea’s streak of high-profile collaborations continues with NASA, working with the space agency’s Mars Desert Research Station to produce the RUMTID collection. Unveiled at Democratic Design Days 2018 earlier this month, RUMTID features four product ranges that tackles separate issues related to urban, small-space living: time, space, water and air.

The collection includes a redesigned air purifier, a terrarium pod, lighting solutions, and a modular, block-based furniture system. The latter is made possible by a new lightweight veneer material made of recycled wood and waste rolled into hollow tubes, allowing for custom-built pieces. Take a look at the products here:

“We want to learn from extreme scenarios and connect them back to Earth, focusing on urbanisation and small-space living,” said Siri Skillgate, one of five designers involved in RUMTID. “In Tokyo, there’s a literal built-in thinking around small space living that allows for modularity and mobility. We felt really inspired by all of the interesting solutions in people’s homes and at the capsule hotels—in particular when it comes to storage.”

The Ikea x NASA RUMTID collection is slated to launch by 2020.
