7 Things to do in the Klang Valley this weekend: 5 & 6 August 2023

You made it! It’s the first weekend of a new month and you deserve to celebrate with a bang. From sweet treats to photography workshops, here are seven things you can do during your two-day break and beyond.

1. EXPLORE TUMI’S LATEST FALL 2023 COLLECTION

Where: Tumi’s website

It’s always the little details that leads to outstanding performance. “Essentially Beautiful” is Tumi’s Fall 2023 campaign that aims to dig beneath the surface and showcase the true beauty in the details of their products. The campaign features returning Tumi crew members: Formula 1 driver Lando Norris, pro-footballer Son Heung-min and acclaimed singer-songwriter and actress Reneé Rapp.

The Fall 2023 collection sees the launch of Alpha X, a high-performance, premium version of the iconic Alpha collection. Crafted from PX6, Tumi’s most durable fabric to date, the Alpha X is available in the Meteor Grey colorway and available styles include the International Dual Access 4 Wheeled Carry-On, Slim Backpack and Compact Sling.

Tumi’s 19 Degree Collection is the epitome of innovation and timelessness with the aim to accompany the modern traveller in every aspect of their life. As an extension of their sustainability efforts, the collection is made from post-industrial recycled materials and PET linings, and now comes in Dark Denim.

The Fall 2023 collection also features new hues and textures, including Slate Blue Texture, Blush/Navy Liquid Print, Hunter Green, Deep Plum, and Red. Some highlights include The International Expandable 4 Wheeled Carry-On and Extended Trip Expandable 4 Wheeled Packing Case that both come with a handy zipper expansion. The luxury benchmark in travel, 19 Degree Titanium, has new additions that include the Briefcase and Extended Trip Packing Case, arriving in a larger size that’s perfect for modern travellers.

Tumi’s women’s collection, Georgia, also received an upgrade. The collection now features bags in natural grain pebbled or smooth leather, with minimalist styles and elegant draping. Liquid Embroidery debuts on select Georgica pieces this season, while all colorways include touches of gunmetal hardware.

The unearthed serenity in a mother’s sarong. The smell of burnt photos. And what if forgetting is not erasure, but mere misplacement? – Alu & Lesung, 2023

Healing is different for everyone. For some, it’s easy to open up about the struggles they’ve been through, but for others, it’s something they choose to keep to themselves. A production by Theatresauce in collaboration with The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPAC), Alu & Lesung is a project that zooms into the struggles of these individuals—vulnerable moments that they often keep to themselves.

This experimental and multisensorial theatre experience will take you on a journey of an ensemble as they revisit calmer moments in their lives, what happens after they deal with the loss of security, and their newfound journey of healing. The audience will have the honour to take a peek into those private moments. The show also utilises movement, minimal text in various languages, scent, light, sound, and projections.

Where: Ilham Gallery

When: 5 August – 5 November 2023

Be entranced by the dance of a Javanese community. Phantom is a video series that comprises two complimentary works, Reversal and Terra Incognita, both known as “Luka dan Bisa Kubawa Berlari” in Indonesian.

These moving-image works were created by Timoteus Anggawan Kusno with the jathilan trance dancer community to emphasise the significance of alternative cultural practices. It also aims to explore the perception of time and the cultural resistance to the idea of high culture in the Javanese society.

Jathilan, also known as Kuda Kepang or Kuda Lepang, is a dance that’s often done to engage with spirits. Back in the old days, it was done with the intention to cleanse a village of evil spirits. The state of trance the dancers’ experience allows them to release repressed emotions and experiences with no constraints, and it’s also believed to be when the vision of the future can temporarily meet the ancestral spirit in a dancer’s body.

6. CELEBRATE THE ART OF JAPANESE HIGHBALL WITH SUNTORY WHISKY KAKUBIN

When: All through August

Although there are plenty of Japanese whiskies in the market today, Suntory Whisky Kakubin remains a favourite among many for its sweet aroma, rich flavour, and dry finish.
