3. Learn history through art at the ‘Nirmala Dutt: Statements’ exhibition

Where: Ilham Gallery
When: 18 July – 24 December 2023
The ‘Nirmala Dutt: Statements’ exhibition will bring together a series of works that are presented as “statements” from the late artist. These works include paintings on canvas, text and images, and even experimental pieces. For the uninitiated, Nirmala Dutt was an artist that forged a strong presence in the local art scene—one who consistently spoke to power, without fear. Her works addressed the social injustice and atrocities of war and how it affected women and children.
The exhibition is divided into three sections. The first is more personal as it speaks of her position as an artist and her perception of women. Further, the right section focuses on her art that reveals the human and environmental costs of building the supposedly “progressive” nation that is Malaysia today, while the left section holds her paintings that tell the story of global conflict and racial violence in the 1980s and 1990s.

The exhibit will highlight the unique skills and perspectives of each individual while embracing diversity, thus creating an inclusive industry. Each display is unique to an individual and highlights how different people’s perspectives are, even though they are given the same theme.
