BURO Tries: Electric karting at Evolt Karting

If you grew up feverishly playing Mariokart on your Nintendo devices, this one’s for you. Evolt Karting is Malaysia’s first-ever indoor electric go-karting centre, founded by professional racing driver Weiron Tan. With over a decade of racing experience under his belt (or should we say helmet?) and more than a few championship trophies to prove it, Tan knows more than a thing or two about the sport and is now spreading his love for it with Evolt Karting.

Featuring an air-conditioned lounge refreshments, tracks for children, and a range of race formats, this place is not your average go-karting centre. At night, its pitlane transform into a colourful neon-lit area with LED lights illuminating the tracks, making your race experience like no other.

To get a taste of the fast life for ourselves, we ventured to Evolt Karting for a day on the tracks and luckily for you, we documented it for the latest episode of BURO Tries. Here’s everything that went down, plus some extra information on electric karting to get you started.

WHAT IS ELECTRIC KARTING?

Electric karting is exactly what it sounds like: go-karting minus the petrol. It’s the same old sport that takes you racing around a track in lightweight, open-wheeled vehicles. Just like its fuel-powered counterparts, electric karts are speedy and designed to bring out the adrenaline junkie in you. You’d still drive on similar tracks, achieve swift speeds, and feel the same exhilaration as you would with petrol go-karts.

HOW IS ELECTRIC KARTING DIFFERENT FROM REGULAR GO-KARTING?

As the name suggests, these karts are fully powered by electricity and don’t require any fuel. So—naturally—fuel consumption and overall impact on the environment drastically decreases. Electric karts are also slightly heavier than petrol go-karts. However, this isn’t entirely a disadvantage, as the heavier karts will have an easier time speeding up on the straight runs of the track.

Another difference you might notice while electric karting is that these vehicles are much quieter than the regular varieties. Though it might be a bummer for those who thrive on the revs of the petrol go-kart, the absence of such noises also means lower exhaust fumes and in turn, less stench from the fuel. However, don’t expect a completely silent experience as you’ll still be listening to the screeching of the wheels and general whirr of the engines throughout your time at the tracks.

Evolt Karting’s sprawling 50,000-square-feet space is home to three tracks: the main track, a track for children, and a baby track for toddlers. For those opting out of the races or waiting their turn, there is a lounge available with light refreshments, live scoreboards, and a bird’s eye view of the track. Visitors who prefer a more stationary experience can also hop one of its simulators to try their hand at racing without actually getting into a kart.

You can take your hands off the wheel—figuratively—while at Evolt Karting as everything is taken care of for you from registration to results. Though, you will be doing the driving on your own. As Tan mentions in the video, all you have to do is register yourself as a driver and pick the right race level and packages for you and your group. There are three racing categories—novice, advanced, and professional—that can be determined by your skill, experience, and race results.

Once you collect your helmets and balaclavas, you’re off to the briefing room for a rundown on the safety precautions and the do’s and don’ts while driving. Then, you’re off to the races! Its 600-metre-long track was constructed using a resin with a high grip for optimum control. Whether you get a thrill out of making corners on the hairpin turns or speeding up on the straightaways, the track has got everything you need for an exciting ride.

As for what you’ll be driving, Evolt Karting has Sodi RSX2 karts that are known for being noiseless and are equipped with long-lasting lithium batteries. There is also an EasyDrive function on the karts for first-timers who want a more stress-free and smoother driving experience. Once your race is over, you can head to the lounge to check out your results. If you happen to miss them, don’t fret, you’ll find a PDF of your ranks and times in your email shortly after!
