Radiohead and Hans Zimmer collaborate on an exclusive track for ‘Blue Planet II’

Radiohead and Hans Zimmer have teamed up to produce an exclusive track for the upcoming BBC natural history series Blue Planet II. The track will be featured in a five-minute show prequel, accompanying some of the most breathtaking shots and highlights as well as exclusive scenes from the new landmark series.

Inspired by the sounds of the sea, Radiohead together with composer Hans Zimmer recorded an orchestrally reimagined version of the band’s song ‘Bloom’, taken from their 2011 album The King of Limbs. The reworked track will be titled ‘(ocean) bloom’.

It is a rather special collaboration, as the old version of ‘Bloom’ was inspired by the original Blue Planet series after all, according to Thom Yorke of Radiohead. He said: “‘Bloom’ was inspired by the original Blue Planet series so it’s great to be able to come full circle with the song and reimagine it for this incredible landmark’s sequel. Hans is a prodigious composer who effortlessly straddles several musical genres so it was liberating for us all to work with such a talent and see how he wove the sound of the series’ and ‘Bloom’ together.”

Mark your dates: a short tease of the prequel and ‘(ocean) bloom’ will be released online later this month on 26 September, while the full prequel will make its debut at the world premiere of Blue Planet II at BFI Imax on 27 September.
