A new ‘Power Rangers’ film is happening!

It’s been a long, long time coming, but finally there’s some solid hope that we’ll get to see our favourite childhood series come back to life on the big screen in March 2017. With Lionsgate reportedly at the helm of rebooting the Saban Entertainment franchise of superhero teens, the studio has released an official synopsis for the upcoming film.

Filming has apparently begun in Vancouver, with Dean Israelite directing the film. It is reported that Elizabeth Banks will star as the most famous Power Rangers villain, Rita Repulsa. The iconic rangers will be portrayed by Dacre Montgomery as Jason (Red Ranger); Naomi Scott as Kimberly (Pink Ranger); RJ Cyler as Billy (Blue Ranger); Ludi Lin as Zack (Black Ranger); and Becky Gomez as Trini (Yellow Ranger). Unfortunately we don’t know if there’ll be a Green Ranger or not.

The official synopsis says, “Saban’s Power Rangers follows five ordinary high school kids who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it’s too late.”

It may not sound like a particularly ground-breaking plot – although fans would probably be already well-versed with it – but we’re hoping this reboot will do the franchise its rightful justice. Otherwise, we’re just going to continue mulling over this sweet little masterpiece of reimagining by director Joseph Kahn that cropped up last year:
