Hybrid cars are on the rise. They’re not only more fuel-efficient and better for the environment, but now automotive giants are making them more powerful and some of them are quite a looker. Case in point: BMW’s new i8 Coupé. Describing its silhouette as sleek doesn’t quite cut it but that horizontal split structure isn’t just for show, it’s also for efficiency. BMW calls it “a brand new LifeDrive vehicle architecture” and it represents all BMW i models to come, which means the i8 Coupé is our first taste.
A 2+2 seater, it instantly attracts attention with its scissor doors that give us major Batmobile vibes. Doubling as a plug-in hybrid, the sporty-looking car is equipped with optimised BMW eDrive technology to deliver power that matches its appearance. The often-used “electric driving pleasure” phrase by BMW takes it a notch higher as the high-voltage battery sees an upgrade of cell capacity from 20 Ah to 33 Ah. In plain words, the all-electric range of the i8 Coupé now extends to 55km.
The main numbers: Acceleration of 0-100km/h in 4.4 seconds, fuel consumption of 1.8l/100km, 42g/km for petrol CO2 emissions, and 14.0 kWh/100km for electricity power consumption. Here’s something else to appreciate: The engine comes with a filter that absorbs all the particulate matter contained in exhaust gases.
