Meet the new Mini John Cooper Works GP—with only 10 units in Malaysia

We live in a society that’s constantly pushing for improvements; to be better than, not just others, but ourselves as well. This very philosophy applies to the motoring industry too, as evident with the automotive brands and their never-ending goals to innovate. One clear example of this particular sentiment is Mini with the launch of the most powerful Mini GP ever built—the new Mini John Cooper Works GP.

Now available in Malaysia (limited to only 10 units), the variant pays tribute the first Mini John Cooper Works GP that was create 14 years ago. Made to provide extreme driving pleasure for owners, the vehicle is said to convey an intense, purist race feeling.

The two-litre, four-cylinder engine with Mini TwinPower Turbo—combined with eight-speed Steptronic transmission with mechanical differential lock—is described as the most powerful engine ever equipped to a series-produced Mini Three-Door. In addition, the model can achieve the century sprint in 5.2 seconds and has a top speed of 265 kilometres per hour.

To optimize response, the new John Cooper Works GP is fitted with a divert-air valve whereas a newly developed turbocharger integrated into the exhaust manifold assists with extreme performance. Moreover, Valvetronic fully variable valve control and Double-Vanos variable camshaft timing are standard with the Mini TwinPower Turbo technology.

Expect sharper brake downshifts and direct multiple downshifts during forceful acceleration with a new transmission control system. If you’re driving in automatic sports mode, you will notice increased engine speed level, direct feedback on shift commands, and an increase in shift dynamics.

Let’s now take a look at the infotainment system. The new Mini John Cooper Works GP is equipped with the Mini Visual Boost as standard. This comprises of the 8.8-inch screen in the central instrument panel and a high-resolution five-inch colour screen. Other notable features include Wireless Charging, Remote Services, Mini TeleServices, and Intelligent Emergency Call.

As for the variant’s aesthetics, it is available exclusively in Racing Grey metallic and you will notice that the roof and exterior mirror caps are  finished in the contrasting Melting Silver metallic. Apart from that, the front and rear, the outer sides of the roof spoiler, foils above the side skirts, and the door sill finishers are all stylised in Rosso Red metallic matte.

While that’s already impressive, the new Mini John Cooper Works GP comes with 18-inch lightweight forged wheels. Weighing below nine kilogrammes, the wheels—bearing the GP logo—are part of the vehicle’s aerodynamic properties. Made with a thermoplastic substructure and an outer shell made of carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP), the material combination is utilised for the first time by the BMW Group.

On the inside, the vehicle is fitted with sports seats in Leather Dinamica with silver side edges, red accentuation seams, a GP badge underneath the integrated headrests, and red belt straps. As there are only 3,000 units of the model in the world, you will find the numbering of the model at the interior trim on the passenger side. That’s as special as it gets!

What are your thoughts on the new Mini John Cooper Works GP? It is priced at RM377,470.90 and is now officially available in Malaysia at selected authorised Mini dealerships nationwide.
