Now in Malaysia: Why the first-ever BMW 6 Series GT is a big deal

Locally assembled and officially introduced as the BMW 630i GT, there’s a lot to love about BMW’s latest award-winning portfolio addition. For starters, it received the prestigious EuroCar Body Award in 2017 for its superior body and spatial design. Couple that with the BMW Efficient Lightweight technology and the car instantly saw a drop of approximately 150 kilograms as compared to its predecessor. Looks aren’t deceiving in the case of the BMW 630i GT. Here’s what else we’re loving about the new model from BMW.

THE SPACE

Despite its coupé-like silhouette, there’s a generous amount of interior space for the driver and passengers be it in terms of leg- or headroom. This same generosity applies to the things you’d want to put or transport with your car. The increased luggage compartment volume is now at 610 litres but it can be further expanded up to 1,800 litres by folding down the seats using the electrical control function. Side note: There’s a two-part Panoramic glass roof too.

THE POWER

Like all vehicles, we like to have a look at the numbers that matter. The 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol unit is capable of accelerating from 0-100km/h in a mere 6.3 seconds, delivering a peak torque of 400 Nm. Despite the possible top speed of 250km/h, it optimises fuel economy: combined fuel consumption of 6.6 litres per 100km and CO2 emissions of 152g per km.

THE SYSTEMS

People who are accustomed to driver assistance systems would always feel the difference in a car that doesn’t have them. The BMW 630i GT has tons; from the Lane Departure Warning to Lane Change Warning to the Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function which helps to keep a constant distance from the vehicle ahead at all times.

THE TECH

Who doesn’t appreciate a good surround sound system in a car? For the BMW 630i GT, it’s brought to passengers by Harman Kardon. Then there’s the iDrive system, complete with the Touch Controller on the centre console and the Control Display. Best of all, a personal favourite, the new-generation BMW Head-Up Display; and a second favourite, the new smartphone holder integrated into the centre console, which allows wireless, inductive charging.
