Michelin Guide Malaysia 2023: The complete list of Michelin-starred and Bib Gourmand restaurants

On 13 December 2022, history was made as Malaysia’s first-ever Michelin Guide for Kuala Lumpur and Penang was revealed. The Michelin Guide made their exciting announcement back on 20 October and we finally know which restaurants have made the cut! This year, 97 of Kuala Lumpur and Penang’s dining establishments debut on the coveted list, with four restaurants receiving one Michelin Star and 32 establishments awarded the Bib Gourmand.

The list covers over 20 cuisine types, ranging from Vietnamese to Sri Lankan and French contemporary. “Our first selection in Malaysia highlights the diversity of cuisine on offer in Kuala Lumpur and Penang, reflecting the uniqueness of the country’s multi-ethnic culture in gastronomy,” said Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the Michelin Guide.

In Kuala Lumpur, Malaysian contemporary restaurant Dewakan was conferred one Michelin Star for presenting modern Malaysian dishes honouring provenance by using local and indigenous produce. Likewise, DC by Darren Chin is one Michelin star brighter for its French classics with an emphasis on regional live seafood and local produce.

Two restaurants were awarded one Michelin Star in Penang: Au Jardin, for sophisticated European fare with subtle local twists; and Auntie Gaik Lean’s Old School Eatery, for serving Peranakan cuisine made from Chef Auntie Gaik’s secret recipes and quality produce.

Chef Lim Yan You of Au Jardin wins the Michelin Young Chef Award

It wasn’t just the restaurants that shined brightly yesterday as Michelin Guide inspectors were also on the lookout for service professionals worthy of the Michelin Special Awards. Three special awards were given out for their efforts in making the dining experience special and unforgettable. These are the Service Award to Leanne Lim of Dewakan; Sommelier Award to Mohamed Hafiz Bin Abdullah of DC. by Darren Chin; and the Young Chef Award to Lim Yan You of Au Jardin.

Without further ado, here is the complete list of Michelin-starred restaurants and Bib Gourmands in Kuala Lumpur and Penang of Michelin Guide 2023.
