What makes specialty coffee different from a regular cuppa joe? For one, specialty coffee refers to high-grade coffee, and cafes serving them will seek out producers, farmers, and traders that offer quality coffee beans. Naturally, the good quality stuff equals to a higher price than what you would find at a chain coffee outlet, and the method of brewing them will have a wider range too.
The city of Melbourne was one of the early purveyors of specialty coffee, and many who have encountered it gain an increasing appreciation for higher quality grade coffee.
If you’re headed to Melbourne soon, here is a list of specialty coffee cafes to check out in between itineraries.

While there are several Commonfolk Coffee outlets, the South Yarra outlet is apparently the most coffee-focused. The cafe here takes on a cool, grungy vibe, serving up small-batch brews with bagels and pastries from Rustica down the street. Most patrons take away coffee, but you’re welcome to sit inside or sip on coffee on the streetside tables and people-watch.
Address: 1C Murphy St, South Yarra VIC 3141, Australia
Opening hours: Mondays to Fridays, 7 AM – 3PM, Saturdays 8AM – 3PM, Sundays 8AM – 2PM

One of the original greats of specialty coffee in Australia, Market Lane first opened in Prahran Market (which they recently refurbished) and now has several outlets across the city. Founders Fleur Studd and Jason Scheltus first started Market Lane Coffee in 2009 out of sheer passion and hard work, and it has paid off today with its solid stance in the coffee scene.
