Just when we thought the game of designer musical chairs is coming to a temporary halt as 2018 is coming to an end, it was revealed that Raf Simons is stepping down as Calvin Klein’s chief creative officer, with eight months left on his contract. In a statement released by the brand, it says “both parties have amicably decided to part ways after Calvin Klein Inc. decided on a new brand direction which differs from Simons’ creative vision.” The announcement followed a report by WWD earlier stating that there was a growing rift between both parties, as its chairman and chief executive officer of its parent company, PVH Corp., Emanuel Chirico, said that “while many of the product categories performed well, we are disappointed by the lack of return on our investments in our Calvin Klein 205W39NYC halo business and believe that some of Calvin Klein Jeans’ relaunched product was too elevated and did not sell through as well as we planned.”
Raf Simons was appointed as Calvin Klein’s chief creative officer back in August 2016, and was tasked with overseeing not only all design aspects for its 205W39NYC men’s and women’s runway collections, CK Jeans line, underwear division and more, but also the marketing of the brand. While the runway show during New York Fashion Week in February will be cancelled as a result, the designer will still be showing his namesake label then. The brand has yet to name a replacement, but stay tuned for more updates as more details are revealed.
