A look at Nike’s latest collaboration with Off-White’s Virgil Abloh

Nike’s much speculated collaboration with American designer Virgil Abloh (also the creative director of Off-White) has finally dropped yesterday. The range, aptly named The Ten, features 10 of the brand’s footwear silhouettes, including iconic pairs such as the Air Jordan I, Nike Air Max 90, and the latest Nike Air VaporMax. Abloh lends his design prowess by way of deconstructing and redesigning the sneakers, with added details such as red zip ties and orange tabs on the side of the shoes.

“What we’re talking about here is larger than sneakers, it’s larger than design culture,” says Abloh in a press release. “It’s nothing short of state-of-the-art design. These 10 shoes have broken barriers in performance and style. To me, they are on the same level as a sculpture of David or the Mona Lisa. You can debate it all you want, but they mean something. And that’s what’s important.”

The shoes are categorised into two themes: Revealing and Ghosting. The former is made for a more accessible crowd via hand-cut and reconstructed kicks such as the Air Jordan I, Nike Air Max 90, Nike Air Presto, Nike Air VaporMax and Nike Blazer Mid. The second category sports translucent uppers on the sneakers as a way to unite the silhouettes’ combined 94-year history, including the classic Converse Chuck Taylor, Nike Air Max 97, Nike Air Force 1 Low and newer pairs such as Nike Zoom Fly SP, Nike React Hyperdunk 2017.
