Think of Chanel’s brand ambassadors and the likes of Marion Cotillard, Kristen Stewart, and Blackpink’s Jennie will most likely come to mind, but when it comes to its Cruise 2021 collection, there’s no one more perfect to front the campaign than its youngest muse—Lily-Rose Depp.
Before we delve into the reasons, let’s revisit the brand’s Cruise 2021 collection. As the first fashion house to introduce destination Cruise shows, the brand had to come up with an alternative idea when the pandemic disrupted its plans. So instead of a big event in Capri, Chanel took us on an imaginary journey around the Mediterranean, and incorporated designs from the previous seasons into the line-up.
Inspired by the polished allure of the iconic actresses of the ‘60s who would go on holidays at the Italian and French Reviera, the Cruise’21 collection is made up of looks that are trendy yet exude that sense of ease. During the day? Lightweight tweed suits and loose-fitting denim. And for nighttime, maxi co-ords and sheer pieces that flow beautifully in the wind. In between are cute bandeaus, embellished bikinis, and short shorts.
Lily-Rose Depp captures the spirit of the collection to perfection. As the daughter of American actor Johnny Depp and French actress Vanessa Paradis, the 21-year-old embodies the laidback-cool vibe of an LA girl, as well as the chic ‘tude of a French lady. The tinge of playfulness coupled with sophistication is essentially what a modern Chanel woman is like.
In the campaign images shot by renowned photographer Karim Sadli, the model and actress can be seen posing around the grand stone house (that totally makes us yearn for a getaway, btw) in some of the key pieces from the collection. When asked about the line in a behind-the-scenes video, Lily-Rose describes the looks as “wearable and effortlessly chic”, and mentions the pieces she’ll definitely be packing along on a holiday to the Côte d’Azur—the mini basket bag, and the pair of visor sunnies that’ll allow her to “read in the sun”.
