A look at Stella McCartney’s AW18 menswear campaign, starring Moonlight actor Ashton Sanders

If the name Ashton Sanders doesn’t ring a bell, maybe his breakout role as teen Chiron in the 2016 coming-of-age movie, Moonlight, will. Post-Oscars win, the 22-year-old American actor is starring in a different film this round—in Stella McCartney’s Autumn/Winter 2018 campaign as himself. Directed by filmmaker Austin Lynch, the one-minute video was shot in Los Angeles, and self-styled by Sanders. Sporting the designer’s AW18 menswear collection, the pieces are a contrasting mix of the designer’s traditional British flair and modern sportswear details. Stella McCartney’s signature sustainable practices can be spotted in the collection too—the repurposed camouflage-print pantsuit, regenerated cashmere track pants and the fully recyclable loop sneakers definitely caught our eyes. In an interview with the brand, he revealed his thoughts on personal style, saying “fashion is kind of like its own form of art, right? Art is self-expression. The way I view it is…I look at the looks I create or the clothes I wear as extensions of myself, of a part of myself, whether it’s my actor self or just who I am living in the world, and that’s always changing.”
