BURO Spotlights: Andrea Pompilio dives into the beauty of layering with Onitsuka Tiger SS24

Taking part in one of the ‘Big Four’ fashion weeks—New York, London, Milan, or Paris—is a dream for many aspiring labels, fashion designers, models, and industry professionals. These are the pinnacle of the fashion calendar and every city has its own unique aesthetic and influence on the global landscape of fashion. Onitsuka Tiger stands out among the few brands that have recently built a presence at Fashion Week.

The Japanese heritage brand made its debut in Milan Fashion Week in 2021 under the direction of Andrea Pompilio, who, at the time, teamed with Nowartt’s art director and designer Toyoki Adachi to put on the virtual runway show for the FW21 collection. From that point forward, Onitsuka Tiger has been dedicated to showcasing their offerings during Milan Fashion Week, including the recent SS24 collection.

This time, the brand revealed a contemporary collection themed around ‘Personal Layered,’ mixing sports, legacy, and innovation with technology. On the runway, the layering techniques lend the lightweight coats and outerwear a voluptuous, cocoon-like form. There are also playful details spotted on the ensembles like side slits on tops, cutouts on T-shirts, and dresses with varying lengths.

The allure of the collection is further intensified by its colour palette of black, cement grey, sage green, and the iconic Tiger Yellow, with floral prints in juxtaposition. This specific blossom pattern was designed together with the Japanese textile graphic brand Nowartt, and it draws influence from the elements of earth, water, fire, and wind.

We had the privilege to check out the latest collection up close at Mondrian Singapore Duxton in Singapore last month. Onitsuka Tiger transformed the Shophouse Suite as well as the rooftop pool to showcase all the goods. Of all things, the shoes are the ones that instantly caught our attention.

Coming in vivid shades, such as orange, turquoise, silver grey, and black, the velvet-laced sandals with ankle ties are a visual feast for the eyes. The new styles of slip-ons, high-cuts, and ankle boots are equally wonderful with their coated canvas uppers and bold yellow accent on the front of the sole. Not to be missed are the sheer sweatshirts, delicately knit cardigans, and the cherry on top—a cream evening gown adorned with ruched trim and shimmering gold details.
