Viktor & Rolf’s Spring 2019 Couture collection has all the memes you need in your life

Paris Haute Couture week has always been a place where awe-inspiring creations come to life. So far, some of our favourites include Chanel’s Marie Antoinette-meets-the-’80s Villa Chanel show, Dior’s circus-themed runway, and Valentino’s oh-so-ethereal collection. But the beautiful looks aside, couture may not always be that relatable for most people, and Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren aimed to change that this season. At their Spring 2019 Couture catwalk, the Dutch designers sent down a series of rainbow tulle gowns with OTT ruffles and proportions, complete with memes that adequately express our feelings some—maybe most—of the time.

The gowns boasted phrases such as “Sorry I’m Late I Didn’t Want to Come”, “*F* This I’m Going to Paris” and “I’m not shy, I just don’t like you”. Speaking to WWD during a preview of the collection, Viktor and Rolf mentioned that the slogans are “the kind of message you find on social media, with the same instant feeling,” before mentioning that the aim was to create a “strange contradiction.” He added, “All these statements that are so obvious or easy—there’s a lot of banality on Instagram and social media in general—are counterbalanced with this over-the-top, shimmery, romantic feeling.” Our question is: Which couture gown speaks to you the most?
