Easy, breezy, beautiful: Tory Burch Resort 2017

Upon entering Spago by Wolfgang Puck in Singapore, one could not help but to feel like they were instantly transported to a holiday resort. From the Arecaceae leaves decorating the room to palm arrangements on the table, Tory Burch had beach aesthetics at the 57th level terrace lounge down to pat.

The collection notes read, “Resort 2017 takes us back to Round Hill, Jamaica, in its heyday and plays on the spirit of island living. We balance relaxed with refined, taking inspiration from Lauryn Hill, whose style epitomizes cool elegance.” It is no surprise why these were the main touch points for the resort collection – it is not the first time Burch brings Jamaican influences to her shows and collections. Also, the designer is a fan of Hill’s, even having the musician performed at her Paris store opening in July 2015. However, the Jamaican inspired lineup is far from literal, and anything but Rasta.

Looking around the room, it is apparent that Burch stayed true to her word. Island ease is reflected in the fluidity and movement of the collection: from airy hostess dresses to billowy wide-legged pants. Whether it flows around the body, falls to the ankle or floor, the relaxed, elegant silhouettes are prominently featured. Although voluminous accents are seen in a bell sleeve and a cascade of ruffles, there was nothing too bohemian. Instead, the lineup is finished off with a clean, sporty vibe with pieces such as the side-striped pants, a raffia tweed suit and wrap dresses with contrast piping, balancing the feminine touch with a laidback, tomboy attitude.

The island flair does not stop at roomy silhouettes: Burch drew inspiration from nature’s lines and colours for Resort 2017: indigo tie-dye that depict ocean waves seen from above, abstract lines that evoke the watery ripples of a changing tide and vibrant array of flowers and foliage. Tropical shades dominate the colour palette with the likes of sky and sea blue, palm green and sunset hues like samba red and goldenrod. Burgundy and white round out the refined palette, punctuated by the stark contrast of ivory and black.

The collection displayed an emphasis on texture, exemplified by fringe, jacquard and weaving. The accessories are no exception as they are presented embellished: shells, seed beads, pom poms and tassels appear throughout. Lending a sporty element, there are the sequined slide shoes, metallic bungee cord necklaces and a nylon backpack printed to look woven. Burch also kept it playful with parrot motifs and dangling earrings in the shape of fishbones.

Take a walk to tropical paradise through the Tory Burch Resort 2017 looks in the gallery below. If the collection does not make you want to take everything along with you to the Caribbean (or anywhere else for that matter), we don’t know what will.
