MFW SS16: Gucci

Geek chic redefined

MFW SS16: Gucci

Held at a disused train station, the semi open-air space for the Gucci show set the scene for the Alessandro Michele’s latest outing for the brand. Yes, Michele’s Gucci girl still had a penchant for geek chic, looking slightly awkward in her oversized glasses, albeit super sparkly ones, but this time around, she was on a journey to find love.

The peek-a-boo lace, and sheer chiffon dresses were just some of the pieces that alluded to the Carte de Tendre, a 1654 novel by Madeleine de Scudéry-a map of tenderness that shows the path to love. And along the way, there was a romantic maxi dress in a bird print, with floral embellishment on the shoulders, Oriental jacquard pant suits and serpents slithering up a thigh on a cream-coloured pant or on the back of a sheer black lace dress.

There was a strong ’70s flavour in the collection, enhanced by an eclectic mish-mash of prints or an unexpected accessory thrown in, like metallic gold fingerless gloves worn with an embroidered gown – off-kilter but only just so, after all, de Scudéry’s map celebrated a rebellion against conventions.

Beautiful, poetic and highly romantic, it seems Michele is on the right path to true love.
