Armani Privé SS17 Couture proves that orange can be the new black

Armani Privé Haute Couture Spring 2017 offers one very bold suggestion: Varying shades of amber as a haute replacement to the monotonous black preferences of the fashion community. Thoughts?

No stranger to composing an entire aria from a single hue—evidenced by his legion of lilac ensembles at his previous couture showing—Giorgio Armani has selected a unabashedly striking colour for this year’s line up. It’s easy to consume and be consumed by a shade as unbridled as this but under the deft direction and meticulous hands of Mr. Armani, it would be a shame to be distracted from the exquisite detailing that saturates the collection. It is, after all, couture.

Orange in its many iterations—gauzy tangerine pleats, delicate cantaloupe beads, straps of shantung in a rich rust, and corded bodices in sandstone and ginger—provided necessary nuance in an otherwise obvious presentation.

Returning to the topic of distraction, two golden girls seated in the front row received nearly as much attention as the day’s main agenda. Newly-announced Oscar nominees—Hollywood darling, Nicole Kidman and French actress, Isabelle Hupert—were in attendance and word on the street is both ladies may well drop the name “Armani Privé” when asked the essential red carpet query, “Who are you wearing?” come film’s most antipated awards gala.

And as for those still asking “Why orange?” Take it from the mouth of the designer himself—“Because it’s an optimistic colour. It’s a colour that looks good for blondes and brunettes. It’s fresh – this is the new generation Armani.”
