These stylish doyennes light the way, showing us that aging is no impediment to having the most divine wardrobes, and luckily for us, by using technology to chronicle their journeys.
Lyn Slater, 63, @iconaccidental
The Accidental Icon is also a professor at Fordham University’s Graduate School of Social Service. Slater is a huge fan Japanese designers, namely Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons and Yohji Yamamoto. She describes her blog as for women who are “somber, seductive and romantic”, and who “[do not] consume garments, [but] lives her life in them and dresses honestly.”
Linda Rodin, 67, @lindaandwinks
Former stylist Linda Rodin founded her own beauty company in 2008, which has since been acquired by Estee Lauder and has visibility with more than 100 stockists. Her adorable poodle Winks features heavily on her Instagram feed but it is her effortless sense of style that we are most in love with.
Suzanne Golden, 70-something, @beadygurl_visual_caffeine
New Yorker Suzanne Golden may be in ownership of the world’s most enviable collection of Comme des Garçons (which she supplements with a healthy sprinkling of Junya Watanabe, Sacai and Yohji Yamamoto). Even with clashing textures and colour and crazy proportions, Golden manages to never look clownish or outlandish: she looks comfortable and at ease, her clothes a natural extension of her personality.
Judith Boyd, 74, @stylecrone
A native of Colorado, Judith Boyd once co-owned a hat store in the ’80s and is an avid collector and wearer of headgear. Her vintage looks are always poised and elegant, reminiscent of an era when chivalry wasn’t dead and ladies didn’t have to put all assets on display for Instagram fame.
Baddie Winkle (real name Helen Ruth Elam Van Winkle), 88, @baddiewinkle
Baddie Winkle is prime example of someone with absolutely no f**ks to give. The sassy octogenarian’s personal style is loud, colourful and occasionally rude, but the great-grandmother of three shows us that as long as you’re having fun and not hurting anyone, then you can do whatever the hell you please.
Iris Apfel, 95, @iris.apfel
The legendary Iris Apfel has been a creative all her life. After studying art history at New York University and art at the University of Wisconsin, she started her career working at Women’s Wear Daily, as well as an assistant to interior designer Elinor Johnson. After marrying the love of her life, Carl Apfel, the newlyweds launched a textile firm which they ran together for more than forty years. Iris has also worked on restoration projects on the White House for nine presidents of the United States of America.
Aiden Brady, 51, @mr_aidenbrady
Here’s a little gratuity for making it this far: Aiden Brady is a new-ish member to the ’50s club but the British model only seems to get better looking with age. Brady was scouted while working as an English teacher in Barcelona (aged 45) and quickly cornered the market for mature male models (his luscious head of hair has us eagerly anticipating the day we go grey).
