What we know about Urbanscapes 2016 so far

If you haven’t already heard: yes, Urbanscapes 2016 is happening! After a one-year hiatus, Malaysia’s longest-running creative arts festival is back, this time with a fresh new concept. Here is what we know about the festival so far:

1. Running from 23 April to 8 May, Urbanscapes 2016 will span across three weekends. The venue, you ask? This year, the city of Kuala Lumpur will act as the festival site, going back to where it first started with creative shenanigans taking place in various parts of the city.

2. One thing is for sure: the festival will start and close with a bang. Aussie band Tame Impala will play their catchy brand of psychedelic rock at KL Live on 23 April (tickets are already sold out!), while M83 closes out the festival at the same venue on 7 May with their electro-synthpop tunes.

3. Market of Experiences (MOE) returns to Urbanscapes this year, bringing its unique concept of a cross borders, experiential market to the festival once again. This imaginative crew from Singapore engages with the public in interaction through their senses; think a market where one can smell memories and taste poetry—definitely not your everyday, run-of-the-mill experience. MOE will take place at Urbanscapes House, Medan Pasar on 30 April and 1 May.

4. Skateboarding enthusiasts and non-alike are likely to be intrigued by Cannot Be Bo(a)rdered, an exhibition that will feature works by 16 artists and collectives from Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. It explores the urban theme of skate culture and its psyche through creative artworks, with skateboards as a primary medium. It will be held throughout the festival, from 23 April to 8 May, at Urbanscapes House, Medan Pasar.

The countdown has already started on the Urbanscapes website, but we’re pretty sure there’s more to come in the line-up. Follow their Facebook page or Instagram account for all the live updates.
