Raya 2025: 5 Things You Shouldn’t Do on the First Day of Raya

Oh, how time flies! Believe it or not, we are already at the tail end of Ramadan. A month of restraint and reflection is making way for a season of renewal, and we have already sorted all the best baju raya, accessories, and gifts to indulge in as a well-earned reward. That said, every great celebration comes with a few “don’ts” worth remembering. That is why we have curated a list of things you should avoid doing on the first day of Raya so as not to run the risk of undoing all the progress you have made.

STARTING THE DAY ON EMPTY STOMACH

Getting out of bed early in the morning may be difficult for some, but that is not an excuse to rush through our Raya rituals. So take a bite of that ketupat and rendang before you sprint to the mosque for the Eid prayer. After all, it is a Sunnah, which symbolises the end of Ramadan—a month in which we are forbidden to feast during the day.

FASTING

Speaking of which, fasting on the first day of Eid is strictly prohibited. This is because, according to the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim), the first Shawwal is considered a day of victory that should be celebrated with joy. So if you flub your puasa and are thinking of replacing it, we’d strongly recommend picking another day.

VISITING GRAVES

Though visiting the graves of loved ones is generally permissible, some scholars have argued that it goes against the meaning of Eid, which should be welcome in a victorious spirit. They have made a point of citing the Prophet PBUH, noting that he was never known to visit the graves on the first day of Eid, choosing instead to partake in joyful gatherings.

OVERSTAYING YOUR WELCOME

Raya offers us the chance to reconnect with family members and friends. But we all know that one person who lacks consideration for others and is oblivious to social cues (send this listicle to your shared group chat!). We’re here to remind you to be mindful. Do not overstay your welcome, do not criticise the host, and watch your children.

PAYING ZAKAT FITRAH

You have a whole month and still manage to forget to pay the zakat fitrah (obligatory alms)? Tsk tsk. While you’re allowed to do so on the first day of Raya, getting it done early is advisable. You can find the collection points pretty much anywhere—from the mosques to the malls. But if you’re that pressed for time, there are always online payment options.
