The biggest K-pop news in July 2023

We’re more than one week into the month of July and already, a lot has gone down in the world of K-pop. From fresh summer bops and exciting collaborations by NewJeans and TXT to Jungkook’s highly awaited solo debut, here’s everything you need to know about your K-pop faves so far.

NewJeans drops music videos ahead of album release

All eyes are on NewJeans as the quartet has just released their new pre-singles, New Jeans and Super Shy, on 6 and 7 July respectively. The group’s summer comeback has been highly anticipated as the young outfit dominated airwaves all over the world with their viral debut tracks Hype Boy and Attention last year.

Staying true to their youthful and refreshing concept, New Jeans and Super Shy feature the members’ breezy vocals and deliver Y2K nostalgia (PowerPuff Girls, anyone?) with catchy choreography. The singles come ahead of NewJeans’ new EP Get Up which will be released on 21 July with a total of six songs.

TXT and The Jonas Brothers kick off summer with Do It Like That

Yes, The Jonas Brothers are officially in their K-pop era! Teaming up with Big Hit’s Tomorrow X Together (shortened to TXT), the two bands released their collaboration track Do It Like That on 5 July. Reflecting both the group’s music style and discography, the song is a fun and addictive summer-ready anthem that will get anybody grooving in the heat.

BTS’ Jungkook stuns in Seven teaser

As ARMYs countdown to 14 July for Jungkook’s highly awaited solo debut, the anticipation continues to build as Hybe has released even more teasers of what’s to come. On 6 July, social media went up in a frenzy as the singer’s concept photos and film were released. Why? Apart from his blazer and layers of accessories, Jungkook is otherwise topless in a poster.

In another image, the 26-year-old is captured sitting on a chair whilst showing off his tattoos, giving off a sensual yet edgy vibe befitting his Calvin Klein global ambassador role. On the same day as his global solo premiere, Jungkook is also set to perform on Good Morning America’s Summer Concert Series 2023, becoming the first K-pop solo artist to do so.

Twice makes history with MetLife Stadium sell-out

In an amazing feat, Twice has been declared the first K-pop group—and girl group in general—to headline a sold-out show at MetLife Stadium. Following their performance on 6 July at the historic venue in New Jersey for their fifth world tour, Ready to Be, Onces (Twice’s fandom) took to Twitter to congratulate the nine members on this record-breaking achievement. The MetLife Stadium is home to the New York Giants and the New York Jets, with a seating capacity of 82,500 people.

EXO drops silky music video for Cream Soda

10 July marked a special day for EXO-Ls around the world as it marks the return of EXO! The famous boy group made their comeback as a full group (sans Chinese member Lay AKA Zhang Yi Xing and Kai who is currently in the military) since Power in 2017. Fans can listen to their seventh full-length album titled Exist which also dropped on the same day.
