Charlie Lim’s Guide to Happiness

What makes me happy?

Spending quality time with my loved ones. Writing and working on my music. At the time of writing this, I’m currently in the midst of doing that—with Totoro by my side.

A book that makes me smile

It’s actually a kid’s comic book series by Troy Chin titled Loti. It’s very cute, wholesome and I highly recommend it.

A song that makes me smile

Easy Living by Lester Young and Billie Holiday. It has a beautiful tune and it’s the first song that my wife and I danced to as a married couple. It also happens to be the soundtrack of a post-apocalyptic/dystopian RPG game called Fallout.

Netflix shows to watch that never fail to cheer me up

Food Wars, an anime that’s also known as Shokugeki no Soma. It’s hilarious and actually quite wholesome. But at the same time, it’s a bit perverse… it has a lot of unnecessary nudity so probably not something to watch with the whole family

Feel-good movies to watch when I’m feeling down

My Neighbour Totoro. Good movie and this time, great for the whole family.

Go-to Twitter account for a pick-me-up

Thoughts of Dog. The handle is @dog_feelings. It’s basically the pinnacle of positive anthropomorphism and it’s a rose among thorns of social justice, warfare and bad news of the COVID-19 situation.

Happy foods

I’d have to pick ramen. I just had a big bowl of it for dinner. It’s hearty, very easy to make and yet you can make it as intricately as you want. There are no rules.

Happy Hour drinks—non-alcoholic

I’m a huge teh halia fan. Kurang manis (less sweet) if possible and iced on a hot day. It really warms the soul.

What I do when things feel overwhelming

Take a few deep breaths, take a walk (if possible) or talk to somebody.

Favourite inspirational quotes

Nothing ever really goes to waste.

Relevance is relative.

It’s always about the journey, not the destination.

The last one is a cliche but it’s true.

Hummingbird by Charlie Lim & Linying

Take a break, play the clip below and close your eyes for a comforting track like no other:

“My song Hummingbird is a collaboration with Linying, who is one of my favourite singer-songwriters; and it’s about finding the courage to believe in something new again—even though we have the tendency to repeat past mistakes. The song was actually born out of the recording and writing sessions from my last album Check-Hook, which was a lot more electronic-dance-oriented. So this was basically a half-written demo that I didn’t really know what to do with.

I wrote the chorus and my verses first. I’ve always loved hummingbirds and wanted to work it into a song as a metaphor somehow. Then came the thought of turning it into a duet and I’ve always been a big fan of Lin, so I gave her a call and things just fell into place quite effortlessly. I’m glad we could get the song out to everyone.”

Charlie Lim

Singer

With his soulful vocals that are either paired with electronic-pop beats or soft folk melodies, it’s not hard to fall in love with Charlie Lim—or his songs. Best Song of the Year by Apple Music, Fresh Vibes of the Year at the National Youth Awards 2019, sold-out shows and more than 1.5 million Spotify streams for his last album, Check-Hook are only some of the many achievements that Singaporean singer-songwriter Charlie Lim has gained since he first broke into the Southeast Asian music scene.

And there’s more to come.

His latest single—after the recent Hummingbird—is a collaboration with Gentle Bones titled Two Sides.
