REVIEW: Episode 1 of ‘Lovestruck in the City’ on Netflix

It’s almost time to bid adieu to the unprecedented year we’ve had, but not before Netflix drops a new K-drama series—Lovestruck in the City was just recently broadcasted, airing on Tuesdays and Fridays. Unlike the usual TV shows, the length of each episode is only 30 minutes long. Thanks to the well-known names in the casting list (Kim Ji-won, Ji Chang-wook, Kim Min-seok and more), Lovestruck in the City has garnered quite a substantial amount of buzz.

Plot

Far from your basic K-drama series, Lovestruck in the City is filmed in a mockumentary format—where the characters are being ‘interviewed’ by the producer. It’s almost like watching a scripted dating show… just that it is actually scripted in the first place.

Based on the first episode, the plot is seemingly centred around the romance between Jae-won (Ji Chang-wook) and Eun-oh (Kim Ji-won). As the 30-minute long chapter didn’t exactly shine the spotlight on the other four characters, we’re not too sure where the direction of this show is headed just yet. However, an interesting role to keep an eye on would definitely be Oh Sun-young, played by Han Ji-eun, who is a 30-year old gym teacher and serial dater—something tells us she’s more than meets the eye.

Visuals

Not going to lie—the cinematography was on point. Not only was it aesthetically pleasing, the production crew has managed to capture the essence of the thematic elements at hand. It contributed to the K-drama’s distinctive character and identity. The flashback scenes were edited seamlessly and the colour palette used throughout the episode has set the tone for each scene, representing Jae-won and Eun-oh’s traits perfectly.

Acting

Since the cast boast some solid veterans in the K-drama scene, to doubt their acting skills would be akin to sweeping their talent under the rug. The chemistry between Kim Ji-won and Ji Chang-wook was impeccable—nothing looked awkward or contrived, and it felt like they were easing into their roles effortlessly. We have yet to see how the other four characters’ on-screen relationship fare, but we’ll keep you updated once the next few episodes are aired.

Overall

If you’re bored of the usual K-drama rom-com plots, this might be one to add to your watch list. While it’s still too early to tell if the plot unravels brilliantly, Lovestruck in the City boasts a different approach compared to a typical romance series. With its unique storytelling concept, picturesque visuals and outstanding cast, we’d say it’s definitely worth a watch.
