The Athletics events for SEA Games 2017 are already underway as we type. This year, Malaysia is aiming to secure six to seven gold medals across the numerous athletics disciplines; so far we have three in the bag. The last of athletics competitions will take place tomorrow, and Karen Yap—one of the favourites to medal—will be representing our nation in the discus throw event.
No stranger to breaking records (she broke seven national age-group records in her teens, and many more after that), Karen currently holds the national record with a distance of 47.79m. However, her sports journey hasn’t been an easy one, to say the least. Throughout the years, she has suffered from a string of major injuries, including a torn ACL and a lower back fracture, which forced setbacks in her career each time. But she never let them get the best of her, and she bounced back from every one of them with grit and determination.
Now, one could say Karen is at her career best. At the last SEA Games, she powered her way to a silver medal. This time, she’s aiming for gold and a new national record. Ever wondered what a day in the life of a national discus thrower is like? Watch as we pay Karen a visit at her training ground and try our hand at the physically demanding sport:
Catch Karen Yap in action at the last day of athletics events taking place tomorrow, 26 August 2017, at National Stadium Bukit Jalil. Admission is free.
