Buro vs SEA Games 2017 athlete Irene Chong in a challenge of push-ups

What happens when you can’t decide on one sport to compete in? You do the one that combines a few. Malaysian triathlete Irene Chong started out as a synchronised swimmer where she had even represented the country in the 2006 Doha Asian Games but as she started to fall out of love with it, she found triathlon.

The sport features a non-stop action of 1.5km swimming, 40km cycling and 10km running and with a newfound passion (and a ton of training), the switch, however, proved to be the right path for Irene. At the Singapore SEA Games 2015—her debut appearance as a triathleteshe was so close to making it to the top three. At 2’22:09, she finished fourthjust one second off Thailand’s Arunsiri Sanruthai who won a bronze.

The SEA Games 2017 will be the fourth time triathlon is included and for her second appearance, Irene is determined to get that medal. But before that, we took her out for a quick chat and a mini challenge. Watch the video below where Buro 24/7 Malaysia’s Digital Designer (and an avid fan of HIIT workouts) Yi Suen Chong go against Irene in a 1-minute battle of push-ups.

The triathlon event will be happening on 21 August at the Putrajaya Water Sports Complex in Presint 6. Admission is free.
