5 July – 22 August, ‘On the Way to the Airport – New Keepsakes’ by Anurendra Jegadeva @ Wei-Ling Contemporary @ The Gardens Mall

A solo exhibition by Anurendra Jegadeva, one of Malaysia’s leading contemporary artists, ‘On the Way to the Airport – New Keepsakes’ features a series of 35 portraits painted on the actual pages taken from The Picturesque Atlas of Australasia, a vintage London-based publication from the 1880s. He paints a unique diary of contemporary Australian life, where he is now living.

2 August – 10 September, ‘Central Market’ – a solo exhibition by Hari Ho @ Wei-Ling Gallery, Brickfields

Before Central Market was the arts and culture emporium it is today, it was a humble wet market. Today, a little over 30 years since its closure, Photographer Hari Ho presents a series of nostalgic, monochromatic portraits of the vendors of Central Market from its wet market days.

12 – 13 August, Good Vibes Festival @ The Ranch, Gohtong Jaya

If you thought Good Vibes 2016 was swell, the music festival returns to match that, if not better. International acts coming our way include headliners Phoenix, G-Eazy, Kodaline and The Kooks, as well as Gnash, Zhu and more. There’s no forgetting the local acts, of course – Najwa, Alextbh, Arabyrd and Lapsap are just some of the names set to take the stage over the weekend.

16 – 20 August, That’s Entertainment!  A Night at the Movies @ KLPAC

Pan Productions presents That’s Entertainment, an evening of movie, music and magic. Directed by Nell Ng with music arrangements by Shensation and choreography by Vivian Chan, the show will bring us on a journey through time, think classics like Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in the 1920s, to the swinging ’50s of Elvis Presley and the modern musical Moulin Rouge.

17 – 20 August, The Cooler Lumpur Festival @ Publika, Solaris Dutamas

This month also sees the return of the festival of ideas – The Cooler Lumpur Festival. Themed ‘Notes from the Future’, this year the festival is based on the notion of “a future we imagined decades ago becoming a reality in our lifetimes”, and seeks to explore the social, political, technological and cultural ideas that have become representative of these times and tell the story of our collective futures.

18 August, Linkin Park Tribute Show @ The Bee, Publika

First Chris Cornell, then Chester Bennington – both great talents, gone too soon. Join our local talents SOG, Kyoto Protocol, Scarlet Heroes, Patriots and Night Skies & Visions for the Linkin Park Tribute Show, an evening of music in honour of the Linkin Park frontman, and the voice of a generation.

24 – 27 August, CausewayEXchange 2017 @ Ipoh

The 8th edition of the annual festival for artistic and cultural exchange between Singapore and Malaysia, CausewayEXchange 2017 will take place in Ipoh from 24 to 27 August, before heading to KL in September. Highlights in Ipoh include ‘Same Same But Different’, a friendly banter between Singapore Literature Prize poets and local Malaysian poets on the differences in our literary landscapes, and ‘Project Suitcase’, a collection of plays to be performed in various locations by different storytellers.

25 – 26 August, Publika Jazz 2017 @ Publika

Fill your weekend with the sweet, groovy sounds of jazz as Publika brings back the largest free indoor and outdoor jazz festival in Malaysia once again. There will be over 100 musicians from different genres of jazz doing what they do best over the two days. Highlights include, Newsound, Fazz, Showck and Awe!, Diandra Arjunaidi, Ryot Jones, Havana Jazz Tumbao and Carpio Brothers.
