SAG Awards 2021: The biggest beauty trends from the star-studded evening

Trends spotted on this year’s virtual carpet: Monochrome in all shades and sizes, French manicures with twists galore, lots and lots of beauty juxtaposition, and more! Ahead, find our picks for the best in SAG Awards beauty, live from the living rooms of your favourite celebs:

Anya Taylor-Joy

The Queen’s Gambit actress took home the award for “Female Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series“, and also the award for best mani of the evening—if you ask us. This negative space manicure is the perfect complement to the star’s art-deco Vera Wang and Tiffany ensemble, and her ’20s-inspired hair and makeup perfectly round off the look.

Jurnee Smollett

Smollett keeps it sweet in this incredible pre-fall 2021 Zuhair Murad gown but brings her classic edge to the table with her slicked-back pixie and her lower lash-heavy cat-eye. Then, to bridge the two distinct aesthetics, she then softens the makeup with a warm wash of brown over the lids and a perfect pink lip-and-cheek combo.

Elle Fanning

Fanning once again proves that she is the blueprint for modern ’60s beauty—bringing this intense black liner all around the eye and pairing it with soft nude lipstick and blush is a classic mod look, but the way her cat-eye flicks upwards to lift the eyes is a beautiful way to modernise the makeup. Plus, this messy, textured hairdo is yet another clear ode to the era, and we’re fully behind it (just look at the volume!).

Kerry Washington

The ‘Female Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series‘ nominee may not have taken home the category award tonight, but she did win all of our hearts with this head-to-toe monochrome blue look!

This eyeshadow and swimming-cap-turned-evening-wear co-ord came complete with a mismatched pattern manicure and an absolutely stunning contour. Gorgeous!

Emma Corrin

The on-screen Lady Diana pays homage to the ’90s with her SAG Awards beauty look, taking inspo’ from the boys of the era. In March, we saw Corrin emulate a young Leo DiCaprio, and tonight’s look was no different. The actress’s sleek peroxide-blonde pixie-bob was styled into a chic middle part, and blown out with a round bristle brush to add volume and set this feminine shape.

Her look, on the other hand, had Sisley written all over it. According to her makeup artist, Florrie White, the look was created to emulate flushed, clean skin. A dewy complexion took centre stage alongside a healthy amount of cream blush all across the cheek and a swipe of ruby red gloss.

Carey Mulligan

This Promising Young Woman attended the awards ceremony looking fresh and radiant—long, natural lashes, fluffy and feathered brows, and a statement pink-red lip make Mulligan’s look. However, our favourite part of this beauty ensemble is her expertly-styled curtain fringe.

There is a perfect amount of texture in her low-key updo, and the twist-and-curl fringe frames her face perfectly.

Nicola Coughlan

One word: Wow. Where to start? Immediately, the eye is drawn to Coughlin’s glittery, smoked-out lashline and thick, spidery lashes—an incredible way to balance punk with sophistication. Then, our attention is drawn to the blush-as-contour technique which adds warmth and colour while sculpting and lifting the face. Finally, the bold, perfectly defined red lip that perfectly toes the line between goth and glam. Instantly smouldering.

Brow-to-lip fuchsia draping, dewy AF skin, and a classic updo? That sounds like a certified beauty moment to us!

That said, though we love a good monochrome moment (as you well know by now), we also love how Cuoco subverts the monochome pink trope and breaks up the colour with her cool-toned, multi-pastel manicure. Plus, the short manicure is yet another great look for you ladies who prefer a more practical nail length.

Helen Mirren

The actress rounds off the best of the pink-and-red monochrome trend of the evening with this radiant, fresh-faced makeup look. Dark, defined brows frame Mirren’s face, while heavy liner, a flush of blush, and a glossy pink lip bring the look together.
