Introducing L’Oréal Paris’ biggest breakthrough ingredient for dark spots, Melasyl™

Say hello to your brightest skin ever because there’s a new skincare ingredient in town. One that took 18 years of research, went through 100,000 molecular tests and was tested (not on animals) on more than 2,500 consumers globally—Melasyl.

L’Oréal Paris recently introduced Melasyl as its strongest molecule for fast brightening results. Suitable for all skin types and tones, Melasyl is clinically proven to visibly reduce 77% of ANY spots that may appear throughout all stages of your life; stubborn spots, sun spots, age spots and acne marks—you name it. This potent ingredient works directly on the source, deep into the layers of the skin to prevent melanin from travelling to the skin’s surface. Along with niacinamide and glycolic acid, this trio of potent ingredients work hand-in-hand to reveal your brightest skin ever.

A miraculous ingredient promises miraculous results. In one week, expect to see dark spots fade and skin clarity improved for visibly more radiant skin. Four weeks later, dark spots are drastically reduced, and skin tone is significantly more even.

Now you may be wondering: how can such an ingredient be this effective in such a short amount of timespan? We spoke to the brains behind all the research, Dr. Elisabeth Bouhadana, Scientific Director of L’Oréal Paris International. When asked how she imagined Melasyl would shape the future of the skincare industry, she replied confidently “Introducing new ingredients always presents a challenge because developing a novel molecule that is both effective and safe requires significant time and effort. At L’Oréal, our team of 4,000 scientists makes this possible by creating groundbreaking molecules like Melasyl.” She continued, “Skincare lies in blending these innovative molecules with existing ones to enhance active ingredients’ efficacy, stability, and performance. Melasyl, in particular, offers personalization and flexibility, which I believe will shape the future of skincare.”

Read on to find out more about the efficacy and planning behind L’Oréal Paris’ star ingredient, Melasyl.

How does Melasyl works on hyperpigmentation?

Melasyl targets the early-stage molecules that precede the formation of melanin in the skin. Instead of addressing melanin after it has been fully formed, Melasyl intercepts the precursors before they transform into melanin. Simply put, Melasyl offers a threefold approach to managing skin pigmentation. Firstly, it prevents excessive melanin production, making it essential for those looking to avoid the development of new dark spots. Secondly, it provides ongoing treatment for existing hyperpigmentation, proving effective when used consistently throughout the year. Finally, clinical studies have demonstrated that Melasyl stabilises skin conditions and reduces dark spots over time.

How Melasyl™ compares to other active ingredients that also reduce the appearance of dark spots?

This method of capturing the preliminary melanin precursors is entirely new and does not exist on the market. Currently, what’s available in the market is niacinamide for its soothing properties or vitamin C which fights oxidation and affects tyrosinase. Additionally, while many tyrosinase modulators are effective, they can be quite aggressive. A key issue with these inhibitors is that they might block tyrosinase without ensuring it remains functional, which is important because melanin is necessary for protecting the skin from UV exposure. Therefore, blocking tyrosinase should be approached with caution. In contrast, Melasyl offers an intriguing alternative in the cosmetics world, as it prevents and controls pigmentation issues without disrupting the skin’s natural processes.

What other active ingredients pair well with Melasyl™?

I would suggest niacinamide due to its anti-inflammatory properties, which effectively soothe the skin and calm the inflammatory molecules that overstimulate melanocytes. Additionally, combine it with glycolic acid and aminosulfonic acid, which target the superficial layers of the skin to gently remove excess accumulated pigments without irritating them. This combination addresses pigmentation concerns in a gentle, non-irritating manner.

What challenges did the brand encounter while producing Melasyl?

We love challenges (laugh). We embrace challenges wholeheartedly and only launch molecules that significantly advance what’s currently available. At L’Oréal Paris, with our extensive range of effective products, it was crucial to develop Melasyl in a way that preserves its maximum potency while ensuring the formulation remains appealing to everyone. Additionally, we prioritised sustainability throughout the process. Among several candidates, we selected Melasyl for its eco-friendly attributes, including its efficient water usage during synthesis. Thus, our challenge extends beyond safety and performance to include a strong commitment to environmental responsibility.
