Bath o’clock: How to get your best skin (and beauty sleep) by tonight

Not travelling anywhere this week? Take the time to pamper yourself by indulging in a tub and letting your skin soak up some nourishing goodness while rejuvenating your senses. According to facialist and body care expert Vanda Serrador from The Body Shop, drawing a good bath is all about using the right mix of products. Here are all the tips you need to get started.

“Total relaxation is so important these days, and is one of my favorite reasons to take a bath. There is nothing better than a nice, warm bath and some aromatic candles. Here are also some key tubbing benefits you need to know:”

A bath helps to open the pores

“This is a great opportunity to deeply nourish and hydrate your skin with oils and body creams, leaving the skin soft and protected.”

It improves your blood flow

“Taking a bath enhances your blood circulation by increasing the rate of nourishing blood cells to damaged tissue. With increased blood flow, you will have better cell growth and organ function.”

It is the secret to a good night’s sleep

“Taking a warm bath before going to bed temporarily raises your body temperature, after which, it gradually lowers in the cooler air, cueing your body to feel sleepy.”

“The ideal water temperature for a warm bath is around the 35 to 37 degrees, and a good length of time for a soak is between 15 to 20 minutes.”

Building your bath wardrobe and setting the mood

“For starters, get all your bath products together: generally they should include exfoliates, bath salts, clay masks, oils according to your mood, plus a few tools, like a Thai wooden massager (a handy tool to help break down knots) or a body brush, a mask applicator and a large towel. Lighting is key to giving your bathroom a relaxing and soothing atmosphere. Chilled-out and relaxing music is a great way to building the spa-inspired experience at home. You can have a few essential oils or scented candles burning to enhance the aromatherapy enhance the experience.”

Tip: Focusing on your breath helps your mind slow down and your body to relax. After bathing, place a few drops of the French Lavender massage oil in the palm of one hand and rub your hands together. Breathe deeply a few times to help further relax your senses.”

The key ingredients of a good, relaxing bath

“As a relaxing bath-prep, I like to mix the African Ximena Scrub with a bit of the Himalayan Charcoal Body Clay and massage in to the skin to remove all the dead cells and increase blood circulation. Then, I soak in a Milk and Honey bath for a perfect mind and body relaxation. I also like to add a few droops of body oils like the Lavender or Monoi oil into the water to maximise my next moisturising step.”

Tip: A warm bath softens your skin and opens the pores to allow moisturisation. It’s a great idea to follow with a body oil like the French Lavender or Monoi oils, by massaging it into damp skin for better penetration and longer lasting results on the skin. Finish with the Japanese Camellia Cream to lock in moisture so your skin is velvety soft.”
