How I maintain my bleached blonde hair (and brought it back from the dead)

Blonde ambitions

How I maintain my bleached blonde hair (and brought it back from the dead)

Going blonde is a huge commitment, but these award-winning essentials have made it easier than ever to keep your blonde bright and your locks lustrous.

When I shared my plans to go platinum blonde a few months ago, I was met with a lot of worried looks. “You’re going to hate it,” said one friend. “It’s going to be so hard to maintain the colour,” one chimed in. “Your hair is going to be so fried,” added another. Well, two months in and I can confirm that my blonde aspirations were certainly ambitious, but I’ve managed to nail down the perfect routine to keep my blonde bright and my locks (relatively) intact. Better yet, it’s not elaborate—all I had to do was swap the products in my existing routine to suit my new fair tresses.

So, if you’re all bleached up and looking to reincarnate your strands, here’s the simple, lazy girl-approved routine that has helped reincarnate my hair from the brink of breakage:

Step 1: Cleanse with the Davines Heart of Glass Silkening Shampoo

This shampoo is a total game-changer for blondes. Firstly, it gently and thoroughly cleanses your hair without stripping it, but it is also formulated to be nourishing and moisturising to prevent your hair from knotting and breaking as you wash it. Because my hair is damaged, it loves to tangle up when wet, and this shampoo helps to prevent that, silkening out and lubricating each strand to avoid further damage.

And, not only does it prevent tangling and dryness, but it also tones out brassiness with the natural blue pigments in its star ingredient, Jagua fruit extract. Better yet, it tones your hair without colour overcharge. Essentially, you can use it daily without risking your hair turning purple or blue. I can’t go more than two days without washing my hair, so this shampoo is a must in my repertoire to keep my blonde hair frosty and soft.

I also have to add that the shampoo smells so heavenly. It has made hair wash day such a soothing ritual and the light, floral scent lingers all day long.

The Davines Heart of Glass Silkening Shampoo won the ‘Best for Blondes’ award in our 2024 BURO Beauty Empties. Shop the product here.

Step 2: Condition and reincarnate your hair

Once your hair is clean, it’s time to restore the moisture with a rich, deep conditioning. There are two options here: For every day, you can opt for the Heart of Glass Rich Conditioner. It has the same blue-tinted jagua fruit extract as the Silkening Shampoo to keep brassiness at bay and works beautifully to restore shine and softness to your locks.

The Heart of Glass Intense Treatment is perfect as both a weekly mask and if your hair needs a little extra helping hand, it is a great daily treatment on very damaged hair. Just leave it to work its magic for one to three minutes (or longer, if you feel like it) and your hair will be left stronger and softer once it’s rinsed clean.

Both conditioning treatments are infused with Davines’ Biacidic Bond Complex and baobab extract that repair the hair fibre from within and prevent breakage—a bottled blonde’s dream!

Step 3: Bring back sleekness and shine with GHD Chronos

Once your hair is washed and conditioned, it’s time to style your locks to restore their lustre. Unfortunately, one unavoidable truth about going blonde is that air drying is no longer an option. Not only do your tresses take forever to air dry, but once they are dry, they will look frazzled and dead no matter what. Split ends come with the territory, so all you can do is smooth them out as best you can.

I like to blow dry my hair on cool until it’s completely dry all the way through. At this point, it’s usually passable closer to the roots, but my ends almost always look like a mess. So, using GHD Chronos, I then style the mid-lengths and ends of my hair to restore shine, smooth down frizz and bring my locks back to life.

I love using this styler—not only does it take way less time to curl or straighten my hair, but it’s also designed to make sure that my hair doesn’t have to endure unnecessary damage. It operates at a flat 185ºC (the optimum temperature for styling hair) which prevents unnecessary damage and breakage—an absolute necessity for my already damaged strands.

The GHD Chronos HD Motion Styler won the award for ‘Best Hair Tool’ in our 2024 BURO Beauty Empties. Shop the product here.

Believe it or not, that’s the whole routine! With just three steps, I’ve managed to keep my blonde hair perfectly platinum and frazzle-free, and you can too. To all my fellow bottle blondes, I wish you nothing but a good hair day.
