This way to induce colour envy: Joan Smalls for Estée Lauder

With eight luscious shades created in collaboration with brand spokesmodel Joan Smalls, the Pure Color Envy Matte Lipstick by Estée Lauder provides daring mattified colours for an undeniable dynamic beauty statement. Formulated with Advanced True Vision Technology, this range of lip wonders gives bolder, visibly fuller, and more curvaceous definitions while feeling luxuriously comfortable on the lips—the result: a bold, envy inducing look with the confidence of a supermodel.

Here, Joan Smalls shares her inspiration for the collection as well as her favourite shades:

1. When did your idea for your Matte collection happen?

“I was prepping for the Costume Institute gala last year and felt like my look needed a better hook. I knew my dress was going to be a simple cream gown by Vera Wang, and I thought ‘this needs something,’ so my makeup artist and I custom-blended an electric violet colour that was the talk of best-dressed lists the next morning.”

2. What do you love about a matte lipstick?

“I love how matte lipsticks don’t look too overpowering, even if the colour is bright. Mattes offer the versatility of making it glossy by just adding gloss to the lip. You can also use a matte finish as a stain for the days you want just a hint of colour. “

3. Tell us about the development process.

“I’ve always liked how the colours in the Pure Color Lipstick line read on first swipe, without having to apply layer upon layer-which is a problem I often have, especially with my skin tone-so I asked the Estée Lauder product development team if we could do this formula, but make it more matte? That laid the groundwork for our new Pure Color Envy Matte Sculpting Lipstick!”

4. What are your favorite shades?

“I gravitate towards the rose-petal crimson that I pair with “a lot of lashes” and some subtle highlights. There are no rules when it comes to makeup, I believe in self-expression. If you’re going to go for it [with your makeup], then go hard. “

5. We heard you crowd sourced to have your fans help choose one shade name.

“We let my Instagram followers choose the shade name for one lipstick (Commanding) which is great because it’s more personal—they had the choice to what speaks to them. I love the interaction with my fans.”

Estée Lauder Pure Color Envy Matte Lipstick is available in November at all Estée Lauder boutiques and counters nationwide.
