“Don’t we all miss travelling? Every destination is always full of inspiration, and if you’ve been there, it comes with memories too. Diptyque, for example, is celebrating its 60th birthday this year, and as part of its celebrations, the brand is inviting all on a Grand Tour of some of the places the founders were most in love with, and the second stopover of this tour is Venice.
“Captured in a single bottle, the scent carries the wearer not to the Grand Canal, but to an island. La Serenissima is affectionately known by the locals as “the vegetable garden of Venice”, with the scent of grass, flowers, vegetables, and herbs also come the scent of the lagoon carried by the wind. Venise, the fragrance, is woody and green, fresh and spicy. “This fragrance really took me by surprise—it has a very fresh and invigorating quality to it that I find quite addictive. Woody notes of responsibly-sourced vetiver oil are at the heart of this scent, contrasted with stunning citrus, bergamot, and lavender absolute for a bright kick to the senses (in the best way possible). It’s bright, green, and a little mossy, which brings to mind a scene of trekking on damp earth with tall trees overhead, dripping with rain droplets. Its floral heart of lily of the valley, hyacinth, jasmine, ylang-ylang is soft and doesn’t intrude the nose while its base of oakmoss and patchouli makes the fragrance clean and sharp. “‘Perfume is an act of love,’ Annick Goutal famously declared during her lifetime. She also believed that happiness is fragrance’s ultimate goal. Both values are apparent in all her creations but, perhaps, most of all in Petite Chérie. First released in 1998, the fragrance was a gift to her daughter, Camille, who was then 20.
“Inspired by Camille’s youthful femininity, the older Goutal composed a tender and comforting gourmand scent. One of the first fruity scents of its time, it’s also an affectionate challenge to take risks and embrace a world of possibilities.
“For Goutal’s 40th anniversary, the Maison released a limited-edition packaging of the EDP—with a gold velvet bow, a medallion emblazoned with the fragrance’s name on the inside, and a perfume bottle pouch. All 40 units that found their way to Malaysia are no longer available but fortunately, the standard edition of Petite Chérie is a mainstay of the brand.
“I say this as it’s a delightful fragrance for the young and young at heart. On me, the medley of rose and pear, cocooned within notes of vanilla and musks, is delicate and fresh.
