5 Beauty trends that will reign in 2018

As we bid goodbye the matte lipsticks and peroxide pixie cuts, it’s safe to say that 2017 was a good year in beauty. Inclusivity was a strong theme towards the later half of the year, what with Fenty Beauty’s new Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation—available in 40 shades for most skin tones; along with the appointment of women of colour as new ambassadors for major beauty brands, such as Adwoa Aboah for Marc Jacobs Beauty and Fei Fei Sun for Estée Lauder.

But as we are a day away from 2018, let’s take a look at a handful of beauty trends that you will start seeing everywhere come the new year:

Golden angles

2018 is the year to say goodbye to your contour palette for you to make way for a range of gold highlighters. Since Fenty Beauty introduced its super popular Killawatt Freestyle Highlighters—especially that KiraKira+ worthy gold hue ‘Trophy Wife’, strobing with other metallic shades are now a thing. Next year, expect more beauty brands to roll out with gold highlighters that Rihanna herself would approve of.

Waist-skimming tresses

We admit—the selfie queen herself Kim Kardashian West is largely responsible for kickstarting this trend, although it’s really the legendary Goddess of Pop Cher who gave inspiration to the reality TV star in the first place (she paid homage to Cher via a nine-post birthday tribute on Instagram earlier this May). But let’s not digress—Queen Bey herself also showed off her take on this trend with ultra-long, butt-grazing locks on Instagram. If you’re keen on trying this out for yourself, we recommend investing in a good hair mask, and perhaps hair extensions if you can’t wait.

’80s brights

The Spring/Summer 2018 season was proof that 1980s neon brights are seeing a comeback in the beauty department. Put away your neutral palettes and nude lipsticks and start embracing colour once more—the more vivid, the better. Experiment with blue over your eyelids (coupled with blue mascara for good measure) and a coral lip gloss if you’d like to turn heads. If that isn’t enough, try out draping for a traffic-stopping effect.

Up your glitter game

We officially ranked glitter to be a trend this year, but next year it’s all about upping your game with interesting ways of repping these reflective dust. Try rhinestones around your eyes for an eye-opening effect, or dust on glitter pigments or sequins on your lips à la Pat McGrath. 2018 is definitely your time to shine.

Layer the lashes

Lashes are having a field day with the revival of super thick, doll-like lashes. If Twiggy was your ’60s girl crush, show your love by layering on mascara for a spidery effect. This past SS18, brands such as Dior and Cushnie Et Ochs made clumpy lashes a statement that we actually want to emulate. More tips here on how you can achieve it without looking like a mess.
