History has a way of repeating itself. In the case of Diptyque, it is a creative one. The first ever Diptyque atelier was set up at 34 Boulevard Saint Germain in Paris where it took on a kaleidoscope of artistic expressions. Two out of three of Diptyque’s founders – Christiane Gautrot and Yves Coueslant were fabric designers while Desmond Knox-Leet was a painter. Together, the trio formed a dream team in coming up with eclectic and distinct themes that were reflected in the patterns, packaging and objects decorating No. 34.
Hence, herein lies the inspiration behind the French house’s Collection 34 this year. The third eponymous collection captures the spirit of a grand bazaar where emotions and nostalgia are fuelled. Along with some of the other fragrances and scented candles from previous 34 editions, this year’s collection includes:
Essences Insensées
Since the launch of Collection 34 in 2014, Diptyque has been enchanting the world with its heady scents produced from an exceptional harvest. For this year’s collection, the field of May Roses in Grasse inspired the perfumer Fabrice Pellegrin to create the new Essences Insensées. The fresh rosy scent is presented in a unique geometric black glass bottle developed by Waltersperfer, a 100-year-old firm specialising in high-end perfume, wine and spirits bottles.
La Madeleine
What do Diptyque and the French novelist, Marcel Proust have in common? The answer is madeleine. The idea of a madeleine-scented candle came about when product creation director, Myriam Badault discovered that the Diptyque founders’ home in Normandy was previously a post office where the author used to send his mail. In homage to the link, Fabrice Pellegrin created a scented wax of a delicious madeleine with a refreshingly lemony and fluffy inside as was described by Marcel Proust in his literary masterpiece, Remembrance of Things Past.
To house this delicious scent, Diptyque collaborated with the NG Oficina de Porcelanas in Portugal. The artisans created a holder combining the chalky, almost gritty texture of earthenware with the smoothness of the black enamel around the edge.
